The Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Nanfang Hospital is a nationally approved doctoral degree authorization point and a high-level department in South China that integrates clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching. The wards are equipped with advanced monitoring devices, laparoscopes, electronic choledochoscopes, ultrasound machines, and other instruments. The department has multiple professors and associate professors, most of whom hold doctoral or master's degrees. In recent years, it has secured over 10 research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and key scientific and technological projects of Guangdong Province, with total funding support approaching one million yuan.
1. Liver Surgery: For diseases with high incidence in the Guangdong region, such as liver cancer, hepatic cavernous hemangioma, and hepatic adenoma, the department adopts a comprehensive treatment approach primarily based on surgery, achieving a high surgical resection rate. This is particularly effective for large liver cancers and central-type liver cancers, significantly improving the cure rate and survival rate of patients with malignant tumors. It is a reasonable treatment option for patients with these conditions. For liver cysts, liver abscesses, and similar diseases, ultrasound-guided minimally invasive treatments are employed, offering minimal trauma, rapid efficacy, and good prognosis.
2. Biliary Tract Surgery: Biliary tract stones are a common disease in Guangdong, with intrahepatic bile duct stones and recurrent biliary stones after multiple surgeries being treatment challenges. Our department uses liver resection combined with choledochojejunostomy, supplemented by choledochoscopy, which greatly improves the surgical success rate and reduces the stone residual rate. We have developed unique approaches in surgeries such as high bile duct cancer resection and congenital choledochal cyst excision.
3. Duodenal, Pancreatic, and Periampullary Diseases: Tumors of the duodenum, pancreas, and ampulla of Vater are among the most challenging areas in abdominal surgery, requiring pancreaticoduodenectomy, which involves the resection of 5 to 6 organs and reconstruction of three digestive tracts. Our department has accumulated extensive experience in this area, completing nearly 100 pancreaticoduodenectomies in recent years with low surgical complication rates and high postoperative survival rates.
4. Laparoscopic Techniques: Our department is one of the pioneers in performing laparoscopic surgeries in the Guangdong region, having accumulated experience in thousands of laparoscopic cholecystectomies (LC). We have also developed unique approaches in surgeries such as laparoscopic liver resection, laparoscopic cyst fenestration for liver cysts, laparoscopic common bile duct exploration and stone removal, and laparoscopic colectomy. As people's quality of life improves, higher demands are placed on medical care, and minimally invasive techniques have become a future direction in medical development. Our department introduced laparoscopic technology early in China, bringing benefits to thousands of patients.
5. Liver Transplantation: Our hospital is one of only three hospitals in Guangdong Province approved by the National Ministry of Health for liver transplantation technology, and it is also one of the units with the highest number of liver transplant cases in the province. Liver transplantation represents a cutting-edge and advanced level of hepatobiliary surgery and is a concrete reflection of a hospital's comprehensive strength. We initiated relevant basic and clinical research early on, and through the joint efforts of several generations, this technology has now fully matured. In recent years, our department has completed over 150 clinical liver transplants, with a surgical success rate as high as 95%. Liver transplantation provides a curative treatment option for patients with benign and malignant end-stage liver diseases. The main indications include: ① End-stage liver disease, such as cirrhotic ascites; ② Malignant liver diseases, such as liver cancer; ③ Acute or subacute liver failure; ④ Congenital metabolic diseases, such as Wilson's disease and Budd-Chiari syndrome. Particularly in Guangdong, a region with a high incidence of liver cancer, breakthroughs in liver transplantation technology offer hope and a glimmer of cure for liver cancer patients.
