Department Details
The Department of Functional Neurosurgery at Shanghai Children's Medical Center, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a specialized clinical base integrating surgical treatment, scientific research, and teaching for functional neurological disorders in children. The department brings together a high-level team of experts in epilepsy, neurosurgery, neurology, and electroencephalography (EEG) physiology, focusing primarily on pediatric epilepsy, movement disorders, and spastic cerebral palsy, and comprehensively performing various cutting-edge surgical treatments. The department is equipped with advanced devices such as neural microelectrode recording systems, neuronavigation systems, surgical robots, high-definition surgical microscopes, neuroelectrophysiological monitors, long-term video EEG monitoring systems, and transcranial magnetic stimulators, providing comprehensive and systematic diagnostic and therapeutic support for pediatric patients. The nursing team adheres to internationally advanced concepts, demonstrating excellent skills, close collaboration, humanistic care, and specialized characteristics, dedicated to delivering high-quality nursing services to every child.
The department has two major specialized disease diagnosis and treatment centers:
I. Epilepsy Diagnosis and Treatment Center
This center is one of the first epilepsy centers accredited by the China Anti-Epilepsy Association. It integrates multidisciplinary expert resources from neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, genetics and development, neurorehabilitation, and neuropathology, adopting a "one-stop" multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment model to provide comprehensive, integrated services for children with epilepsy, from preoperative evaluation and surgical treatment to postoperative rehabilitation. The attending physicians are renowned experts in the field of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment in China, mastering internationally advanced concepts and technologies, and maintaining long-term close collaborations with multiple epilepsy centers in France, the United States, and other countries. The department emphasizes both technological innovation and clinical research, continuously advancing the level of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment.
The team has extensive experience in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment, routinely performing medication therapy, ketogenic diet therapy, invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation (including brain-computer interface technology), and various surgical treatments.
In terms of surgery for refractory epilepsy, the department routinely performs a variety of high-difficulty procedures, including craniotomy for epileptic focus resection, hemispherotomy (hemispherectomy), corpus callosotomy, neuromodulation (VNS, DBS, RNS), robot-assisted stereotactic intracranial electrode implantation (SEEG), laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), and radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RF-TC).
II. Cerebral Palsy Diagnosis and Treatment Center
This center holds a leading position both domestically and internationally in the minimally invasive targeted selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) for the treatment of spastic cerebral palsy in children. The targeted SL-SDR surgical system employed offers prominent advantages, including high safety, ease of intraoperative electromyography interpretation, targeted improvement of muscle tone, precise dorsal root sectioning, and a strong correlation between efficacy and preoperative disease severity. It has been widely recognized by the cerebral palsy treatment community both in China and abroad.
