The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Shanghai Children's Medical Center integrates medical care, teaching, and scientific research. It primarily provides services for children aged 0-18, including neurological rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, follow-up intervention for high-risk neonatal factors, oncological rehabilitation, and comprehensive functional assessment. The department is committed to promoting holistic development in children's motor, cognitive, perceptual, and social skills through early screening, early intervention, and conservative treatment whenever possible. It aims to reduce the degree of functional impairment, enhance self-care abilities, protect children's physical and mental health, and facilitate their better integration into society. The scope of rehabilitation diagnosis and treatment includes rehabilitation for neurological disorders in children such as cerebral palsy, encephalitis, traumatic brain injury, periventricular leukomalacia, cerebral infarction, post-hydrocephalus surgery, post-brain tumor surgery, spinal cord injury, myelitis, post-tethered cord syndrome surgery, and peripheral nerve injury. It also covers rehabilitation for musculoskeletal disorders in children, including sequelae of various fractures, bone and joint injuries, idiopathic scoliosis, congenital muscular torticollis, and trigger finger. Additionally, it provides ultra-early screening, follow-up, and early intervention home guidance for high-risk infants, including those with prematurity, low birth weight, hypoxia, asphyxia, brain injury such as intracranial hemorrhage, hyperbilirubinemia, and infants conceived via assisted reproductive technology. The department offers functional assessment and rehabilitation guidance for children after surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy for hematological and oncological diseases, as well as rehabilitation evaluation and training for various rare genetic and metabolic diseases. It also addresses rehabilitation for speech and language developmental delays, dysarthria, swallowing dysfunction, and comprehensive functional assessment in children. The department is equipped with a full range of rehabilitation treatment items, rich and precise assessment tools, and advanced rehabilitation equipment. It actively promotes multidisciplinary team-based comprehensive treatment, collaborating closely with departments such as Neurology, Orthopedics, PICU, Neonatology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Hematology and Oncology, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Emphasis is placed on early bedside rehabilitation intervention, and personalized rehabilitation treatment plans are developed for children with complex conditions. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Shanghai Children's Medical Center is a member unit of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, a standing member unit for pediatric rehabilitation, and a deputy director unit for autism rehabilitation. It is also a member of the Shanghai Electro-Physiology and Rehabilitation Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance and the Hand Function Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Shanghai Joint Electro-Physiology and Rehabilitation Technology Innovation Research Center. It serves as an industry-academia-research joint development base for the Chinese version of the Infant Motor Performance Test. Each subspecialty physician has received medium- to long-term professional training both domestically and internationally, and many members hold certifications from professional associations at home and abroad.
