The Department of Pharmacy at Shanghai Children's Medical Center is a specialized pediatric pharmacy discipline integrating pediatric pharmaceutical services, teaching, and scientific research talent cultivation. It serves as a clinical pharmacist training base designated by the National Health Commission and the Chinese Hospital Association, as well as a demonstration base for rational drug use under the China Medical Education Association. Additionally, it undertakes undergraduate teaching for institutions such as Macau University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences, and provides internship supervision for pharmacy students at the associate and bachelor's degree levels from institutions like Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences. In recent years, the department has secured two National Natural Science Foundation of China grants, with sustained growth in the number of research projects, publications, and patents. The department comprises multiple units, including the Outpatient Pharmacy, Hematology Pharmacy, Emergency Pharmacy, Fever Clinic Pharmacy, Operating Room Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine Granule Pharmacy, Drug Warehouse, PIVAS, OVAS, and Clinical Pharmacy. It currently employs 98 staff members, including 25 members of the Communist Party of China and 49 professionals with intermediate or higher professional titles. Given the shortage of pediatric-specific dosage forms, the Inpatient Pharmacy has implemented unit-dose oral drug dispensing for inpatients since the hospital's establishment in 1998, ensuring accurate medication dosing. The department subsequently established PIVAS and OVAS, enabling centralized 24-hour intravenous medication preparation for all outpatients, emergency patients, and inpatients. This ensures infusion quality, enhances staff protection, effectively inhibits the emergence of hospital-acquired drug-resistant bacteria, and safeguards medical safety. The Clinical Pharmacy unit currently has 14 full-time clinical pharmacists who participate in clinical treatment teams to assist physicians in rational drug use. Through methods such as enzyme assays, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), and pharmacogenetic testing, they help establish individualized dosing regimens, improve clinical efficacy, reduce adverse drug reactions, and ensure safe, effective, economical, and appropriate clinical medication. The department has established a health education brand program titled "My Medicine, My Health," which promotes rational drug use knowledge and focuses on pediatric medication safety through on-site lectures, WeChat public accounts, and videos.
