Department Details

The Department of Pediatric General Surgery at Shanghai Children's Medical Center was established in 1998, coinciding with the founding of the center. It currently has 41 inpatient beds, 10 beds in the day surgery ward, as well as neonatal wards, mother-infant wards, NICU, PICU, and special consultation surgical wards. Subspecialties include Pediatric Tumor Surgery, Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery, Pediatric Plastic Surgery, Neonatal Surgery, and Vascular Surgery. Under the leadership of the nationally renowned pediatric surgeon Professor Shi Chengren, the department has achieved significant results in areas such as neonatal malformations, pediatric hepatobiliary diseases, pediatric solid tumors, pediatric oral and maxillofacial deformities, and pediatric vascular surgery, earning recognition from peers. The Tumor Surgery division was among the earliest in China to adopt a multidisciplinary treatment model for tumors. Through team collaboration involving oncology, surgery, pathology, and radiology, the long-term outcomes for pediatric solid tumors have approached international advanced standards. Since 2000, the Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery division has organized several national pediatric laparoscopic training courses, covering fields such as pediatric general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, orthopedics, and neurosurgery, gaining a strong reputation. The Pediatric Plastic Surgery division collaborates closely with the Plastic Surgery Department of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, conducting early surgical corrections for infant cleft lip, cleft palate, and facial deformities, achieving excellent outcomes and public recognition. For end-stage liver diseases such as biliary atresia and portal vein malformations, the department pioneered living-donor liver transplantation in collaboration with Shanghai Renji Hospital, completing over 2,000 cases and receiving the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class). The Neonatal Surgery division, supported by the neonatal ward, serves as a Shanghai municipal critical neonatal rescue center. The Department of General Surgery at Shanghai Children's Medical Center is one of China's leading centers for the diagnosis and treatment of complex pediatric conditions. Approximately 70% of patients come from outside Shanghai, covering all provinces and regions across the country. The department handles over 60,000 outpatient and emergency visits annually, performs more than 4,000 inpatient surgeries, and over 3,000 outpatient surgeries. The department currently has 19 physicians and 20 nurses, including 2 doctoral supervisors and 1 master's supervisor. It has published over 100 academic papers domestically and internationally, completed or is undertaking more than 10 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and provincial/ministerial programs, and has obtained over 40 patents.
