The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a secondary-level discipline department integrating TCM, integrated Chinese and Western medicine clinical practice, teaching, and research. It comprises TCM outpatient services, TCM bone-setting, TCM inpatient wards, and acupuncture specialties. The department boasts a complete academic team with abundant talent, currently employing 48 medical, nursing, and technical staff, including 5 professors (chief physicians), 12 associate professors (deputy chief physicians), 13 lecturers (attending physicians), 5 resident physicians, 11 nursing staff, 1 teaching assistant, and 1 technician. The TCM Department is one of the largest centers for TCM and integrated Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis, treatment, and research among comprehensive Western medicine hospitals in Guangdong Province. It features several renowned TCM experts and professors with significant influence within the province and even in South China, including Professor Li Junbiao, a "Famous TCM Doctor of Guangdong Province." To meet the diagnostic and therapeutic needs of diverse patients, the TCM outpatient, bone-setting outpatient, and acupuncture outpatient clinics offer various TCM specialty services, including cardiovascular, hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, respiratory, renal, tumor rehabilitation, geriatric, rheumatologic, gynecologic, pediatric, bone and joint disease, acupuncture for post-stroke sequelae, acupuncture for hyperostosis, acupuncture for facial paralysis, acupuncture for cough and asthma, acupuncture for frozen shoulder, acupuncture for gastrointestinal diseases, acupuncture for cervical spondylosis, acupuncture for neurasthenia, and acupuncture for rheumatism. Among these, the TCM hepatobiliary specialty, TCM tumor rehabilitation specialty, and TCM cardiovascular specialty are notably influential. In addition to regular and specialty outpatient clinics, numerous professor-led clinics are conducted daily. The bone-setting and acupuncture outpatient clinics also provide traditional TCM services such as manual reduction, massage, traction, external application, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, plum-blossom needle therapy, acupoint injection, acupoint catgut embedding, and scraping (gua sha). The TCM Department is characterized by its distinct TCM therapeutic approaches, which are highly popular among patients. On average, it receives approximately 1,350 patient visits daily from various regions within and outside the province. The TCM inpatient ward at the main campus features a pleasant environment and well-organized management, with a total of 11 beds (excluding 20 beds at the Dongshan branch). It serves as a base for integrated Chinese and Western medicine clinical practice, TCM clinical teaching, and resident physician training. The department has accumulated extensive clinical experience in treating common internal medicine diseases with integrated Chinese and Western medicine. In addition to integrated treatment, it employs acupuncture, cupping, bloodletting cupping, scraping, and external application of Chinese herbal medicine, which are well-received and favored by patients for their simplicity, low cost, and effectiveness. Several professors in the TCM Department hold significant academic influence within the province. Professor Li Junbiao serves as a standing committee member of the National TCM Nephrology Society, vice chairman of the Nephrology Professional Committee of the Five Central-South Provinces, and vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial TCM Nephrology Society. Professor Chen Zexiong serves as vice chairman of the Hepatobiliary Disease Professional Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Society. Professors Qiu Ruixiang and Qin Jian serve as vice chairmen of the Cardiovascular Disease Professional Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Society. Professor Zhang Shijun serves as vice chairman of the Sub-health Professional Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Society. The TCM Department is a master's and doctoral degree program site for Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine at Sun Yat-sen University. It enrolls and trains the largest number of students annually among TCM systems within Sun Yat-sen University's medical schools. To date, the department has independently trained dozens of master's students, with over 10 master's and doctoral students currently enrolled each year. Postdoctoral researchers began entering the program in 2009. Additionally, the TCM Teaching and Research Office undertakes the majority of TCM basic theory teaching and clinical preceptorship tasks for long-cycle medical students, five-year and four-year undergraduate students, and international students (taught in English) at Sun Yat-sen University's medical schools. This office is also a member of the editorial board for the fifth, sixth, and seventh editions of the Ministry of Health's planned textbook "Traditional Chinese Medicine." The department regularly accepts domestic and international visiting scholars and has extensive experience in English-language teaching, with several international students from Sweden, Finland, the United States, Brazil, and other countries having studied in its acupuncture specialty. Leveraging the strong research capabilities and comprehensive facilities of Sun Yat-sen University and the hospital, the TCM Department currently undertakes over ten research projects at various levels, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has received three third prizes for Scientific and Technological Achievements from Guangdong Province, one first prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in TCM from Guangdong Province, and one third prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the State Education Commission. Over the past five years, department staff have published nearly 100 papers, including 9 indexed in SCI, and have formally published nearly 10 monographs as editors-in-chief or associate editors, as well as contributing to 5 textbooks. The department engages in frequent academic exchanges and collaborations, having established teaching and research partnerships with universities in Hong Kong, Germany, and Australia.
