**Basic Department Information:** The Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Center (formerly the External Counterpulsation Specialty) is a distinctive subspecialty within the Department of Cardiology of our hospital. Over nearly 40 years of development, it has achieved numerous remarkable results in basic and clinical application research of external counterpulsation (ECP), device development, as well as patents and industrialization. As a safe and effective non-invasive mechanical circulatory assist method, ECP has been used clinically for over thirty years, primarily for the treatment and rehabilitation of ischemic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. To date, several large-scale clinical trials related to ECP (such as MUST-EECP, PEECH, RECC, and the IEPR registry study) have, from an evidence-based medicine perspective, proven the definitive efficacy of ECP in patients with coronary heart disease and angina pectoris, as well as its beneficial effects on some patients with mild to moderate chronic stable heart failure. Furthermore, our department is equipped with multiple cardiovascular rehabilitation examination and treatment devices, including: treadmill exercise testing devices, arterial elasticity testing instruments, cardiopulmonary exercise testing systems, and biofeedback cardiopulmonary rehabilitation therapy devices, providing professional rehabilitation guidance for cardiovascular patients. **Clinical Work:** ECP is suitable for treating ischemic cardiovascular diseases (angina pectoris, post-myocardial infarction, post-coronary stent and coronary artery bypass grafting, coronary slow flow syndrome, etc.), ischemic cerebrovascular diseases (cerebral arteriosclerosis, transient ischemic attack, cerebral thrombosis/cerebral infarction, posterior circulation ischemia, etc.), ischemic eye diseases (central retinal artery occlusion, ischemic optic neuropathy, fundus arteriosclerosis, etc.), ischemic ear diseases (sudden sensorineural hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, etc.), as well as for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in individuals with high cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and family history of premature cardiovascular disease. Currently, our department has 9 ECP treatment devices, capable of administering counterpulsation therapy to over 50 patients daily. In recent years, approximately 7,500 patient-treatments/year have been performed in our department, primarily for patients with ischemic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In 2012, this number reached 8,800 patient-treatments, an increase of nearly 17% compared to 2011. ECP has won the praise and favor of numerous patients due to its non-invasive, safe, and effective characteristics (improving blood supply to vital organs such as the brain, heart, eyes, and ears). **Scientific Research:** Our department is the founding unit and research base for ECP. In the 1970s, the Assisted Circulation Research Group led by Professor Zheng Zhensheng developed and named the sequentially inflating气囊 (air-bag) ECP device with independent intellectual property rights of China. While being used clinically in China, it has been promoted to over 20 countries, including the United States, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Israel, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. Together with the Key Laboratory of Assisted Circulation of the Ministry of Health and other departments, our department has undertaken multiple research tasks, including projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National "Ninth Five-Year Plan" and "Tenth Five-Year Plan" Science and Technology Support Programs. In 2001, its scientific research achievements were recognized as "Excellent Scientific and Technological Achievements of the National Ninth Five-Year Key Science and Technology Support Program." Numerous academic papers have been published in renowned domestic and international medical journals such as *Circulation*, *ATVB*, and the *Chinese Journal of Cardiology*. In 2011, our department led the compilation of the Chinese Expert Consensus on the Clinical Application of External Counterpulsation. Currently, our department continues to undertake research projects, including the Clinical Key Discipline Project of the Ministry of Health and projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. **Personnel Training:** Over the years, in collaboration with the Key Laboratory of Assisted Circulation of the Ministry of Health and other departments, our department has trained a total of 60 master's students and 30 doctoral and postdoctoral students.
