Department Details
The Endoscopy Department of our hospital is one of the largest comprehensive endoscopy centers in South China, with significant academic influence. Our department is equipped with four sets of electronic endoscopy main units, over ten various electronic endoscopes, several fiberoptic endoscopes, and seven specialized nurses. Physicians involved in endoscopic procedures are dispatched from relevant clinical specialties, including five full professors, nine associate professors, and four attending physicians, all of whom are highly experienced. Currently, we perform examinations such as electronic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), electronic gastroscopy, electronic colonoscopy, electronic duodenoscopy, electronic bronchoscopy, and choledochoscopy.
1. **Electronic Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)**: Only two hospitals in our province possess this equipment. It is used for diagnosing submucosal lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, such as leiomyomas, hemangiomas, and heterotopic pancreas; assessing the depth of tumor invasion and regional lymph node metastasis (preoperative TN staging) in gastrointestinal tumors, such as esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer, to aid in surgical planning; and diagnosing periampullary lesions, such as distal common bile duct tumors, stones, and pancreatic tumors, while evaluating the relationship between lesions and surrounding blood vessels. Our department pioneered intraluminal ultrasound and EUS-guided biopsy in the province.
2. **Electronic Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy**: These are traditional procedures in our department, with extensive diagnostic and therapeutic experience accumulated. Examinations are available from Monday to Friday, with same-day reports. In recent years, we have focused on endoscopic treatments, including injection and ligation for esophageal and gastric variceal bleeding due to cirrhosis, polypectomy for gastrointestinal polyps, ligation and resection of submucosal tumors, balloon dilation for achalasia, esophageal stricture dilation and stenting, and treatment of gastric bezoars and foreign bodies. Our department also possesses the first neonatal gastroscope (GIF-N30) in the province, enabling gastroscopy in newborns. We were the first in the province to research and promote "painless gastroscopy" (conscious sedation) technology, meeting patients' special needs and alleviating discomfort during gastroscopy.
3. **Electronic Duodenoscopy**: Used for the diagnosis and treatment of biliary and pancreatic diseases, such as common bile duct stones, obstructive jaundice, cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and chronic pancreatitis. Particularly for the treatment of common bile duct stones, it offers advantages such as no need for surgery, reduced pain, and lower costs, making it the preferred treatment method in developed countries or regions. In recent years, our department has performed endoscopic stone extraction for 200 patients with common bile duct stones, achieving satisfactory results. In early 1999, our department successfully placed a biliary metal stent via endoscopy for a patient with hilar cholangiocarcinoma, the first such case in Guangdong Province.
4. **Electronic Bronchoscopy**: In recent years, we have introduced several new techniques, including bronchoalveolar lavage, stenting, and transbronchial lung biopsy.
