The Department of Nephrology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a National Key Discipline and a Guangdong Provincial Key Discipline. It houses the Ministry of Health Key Laboratory of Nephrology Clinical Research, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Nephrology, the Key Laboratory of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, and is a Guangdong Provincial Key Medical Specialty. It serves as a center for the diagnosis, consultation of difficult cases, and prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease, integrating clinical care, teaching, research, and high-level talent training. It is also the host institution for the *Chinese Journal of Nephrology*. The department currently has 13 senior professional title holders (Professor level), 7 associate senior professional title holders, and 11 doctoral supervisors. The academic team includes members of the Discipline Appraisal Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, a Guangdong Province Distinguished Professor (Pearl River Scholar), and winners of the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. The team has been honored as the Ministry of Education Innovation Team, the Guangdong Province "Thousands, Hundreds, Tens Project" Excellent Academic Team, and the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation Team. The department also employs a number of renowned domestic and international experts as adjunct professors and visiting professors to contribute ideas for the discipline's construction and development. The current academic leader is Professor Yu Xueqing, who also serves as the Director of the Institute of Nephrology at Sun Yat-sen University, a member of the Discipline Appraisal Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, an Executive Council Member of the Asia-Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN), a member of the Global Development Committee (East Asia Region) of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), a Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Nephrology, and the Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the *Chinese Journal of Nephrology*. The Department of Nephrology comprises Nephrology Ward 1, Nephrology Ward 2, Nephrology Ward 3, a Hemodialysis Center, a Peritoneal Dialysis Center, and a Nephrology Laboratory. It currently has 120 inpatient beds, 60 hemodialysis machines, 6 CRRT machines, and 2 APD machines. Annually, the department treats nearly 3,000 inpatients with kidney diseases, manages over 60,000 outpatient visits, and performs over 1,000 renal biopsies. The Peritoneal Dialysis Center currently manages over 670 patients on continuous peritoneal dialysis, making it one of the two largest peritoneal dialysis centers in the world. The long-term quality of life for its patients ranks among the best globally. Furthermore, the center collaborates with major hospitals in the Pearl River Delta region to establish high-level satellite peritoneal dialysis centers, achieving remarkable results and serving as a model for international multi-center peritoneal dialysis collaboration. The Nephrology Laboratory is a key laboratory of the Ministry of Health and Guangdong Province, covering an area of 600 square meters, with total equipment value exceeding 12 million RMB. It possesses the capability to undertake and complete major national or key research projects. Our discipline consistently adheres to a translational medicine research model centered on major clinical scientific questions, closely integrating clinical and basic research. We focus on investigating the pathogenesis, comprehensive prevention, and treatment strategies for common kidney diseases. Considering the actual situation of kidney diseases in China, we prioritize research areas including IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis, and peritoneal dialysis. Simultaneously, we actively conduct epidemiological surveys of chronic kidney disease and implement community-based interventions targeting risk factors. Our important goals are to prevent chronic kidney disease and reduce the incidence of uremia, while providing scientific evidence for government policies on chronic kidney disease prevention and control. In the past five years, our discipline has undertaken a total of 54 various research grants at different levels, amounting to 16.47 million RMB and 570,000 USD. These include 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 10 General Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 4 Major Special Projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health. Additionally, in 2009, we successfully secured funding from the Baxter EGP Program (USA), marking a new breakthrough for our discipline in applying for international research projects. Over the past five years, we have published 340 research papers, including 59 indexed in SCI; edited and published 2 academic monographs; and filed 1 invention patent application. We have received 8 provincial/ministerial-level scientific research achievement awards, including 1 Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. In 2009, a member of our team received the Young Nephrologist Award from the International Society of Nephrology, representing a breakthrough for Chinese nephrologists in this field. In the past five years, we have trained 58 doctoral students and 49 master's students. Annually, we train over 60 nephrologists from across the country. To date, we have trained more than 2,000 nephrologists nationwide, most of whom have become academic leaders in nephrology in their respective regions, contributing a large number of highly qualified talents to the development of nephrology in China.
