### Basic Information of the Department: The Otology Department is equipped with the most advanced hearing and electrophysiological examination instruments and surgical equipment available today. It boasts an outstanding academic team in China, including 3 professors, 3 associate professors, 2 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians. The department also houses a Clinical Hearing Center, staffed by 3 physicians specializing in audiology clinical and research work (1 senior title, 1 intermediate title, 1 junior title) and 5 audiology technicians. Its comprehensive strength has reached a leading level within the province and an advanced level nationally. ### Clinical Work: The department possesses all modern audiological examination, screening, and diagnostic equipment and techniques, and performs various types of tympanoplasty, stapedectomy, facial nerve decompression, glomus jugulare tumor resection, and cochlear implantation (designated as a cochlear implant surgery unit by the Ministry of Health). 1. **Otomicrosurgery:** Primarily focuses on various types of middle ear surgeries, including the treatment of chronic suppurative otitis media, middle ear cholesteatoma, tympanic body tumor, adhesive otitis media, tympanosclerosis, hemangioma, cholesterol granuloma, and external/middle ear malformations. The department performs nearly 800 various otological microsurgeries (including stapes surgery) annually. 2. **Otoendoscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery:** Since the early 1990s, the department pioneered otoendoscopic surgery nationwide. To date, over 3,000 cases of various surgeries have been performed, including endoscopic tympanic membrane repair, myringotomy with tube insertion for secretory otitis media, ossicular chain reconstruction for otosclerosis, and attic exploration with cholesteatoma resection. 3. **Otoneurosurgery:** The department has successively performed surgeries such as facial nerve decompression (for treating facial palsy), facial nerve combing (for treating hemifacial spasm), facial nerve grafting or rerouting with anastomosis (for one-stage functional recovery after facial nerve tumor resection), and labyrinthectomy or vestibular nerve section (for treating intractable vertigo). 4. **Lateral Skull Base Surgery:** Primarily treats benign and malignant tumors of the temporal bone, including middle ear carcinoma, eosinophilic granuloma, giant cell tumor of bone, congenital cholesteatoma of the temporal bone, glomus jugulare tumor, and acoustic neuroma. For these conditions, the department performs surgeries such as partial temporal bone resection, subtotal temporal bone resection, total temporal bone resection, endoscopic-assisted resection of petrous apex cholesteatoma, and translabyrinthine and enlarged translabyrinthine approaches for acoustic neuroma resection. Notably, the translabyrinthine and enlarged translabyrinthine approaches for acoustic neuroma resection are performed only in a few hospitals nationwide and have received positive feedback from patients. 5. **Clinical Audiology:** This is a subspecialty of otology integrating diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. It focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of tinnitus, hearing loss, and vertigo. For tinnitus, treatments include tinnitus matching, pharmacotherapy, masking therapy, sound therapy, and TRT training, achieving good results. For vertigo, differential diagnosis and treatment have significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic efficacy. For hearing loss, conductive hearing loss is first differentiated from sensorineural hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss can be surgically improved. For sensorineural hearing loss, a stepwise treatment plan is adopted: pharmacotherapy based on the possible etiology, hearing aid therapy for patients who do not improve with medication but retain some hearing, and cochlear implantation for patients with bilateral severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. Additionally, genetic testing for hereditary hearing loss is offered to patients with a genetic predisposition, aiding in prevention, treatment, and eugenics. 6. **Cochlear Implantation:** The department has successfully completed nearly 300 cochlear implant surgeries, restoring hearing and speech function in patients. Our hospital performs the highest number of these surgeries in South China with the best outcomes, achieving a leading position in the region and an advanced level nationally. Centered around high-level academic leaders in otology, focusing on core clinical technologies such as hearing reconstruction surgery series and the prevention and treatment series for sensorineural hearing loss, the department aims to secure more NSFC key projects and general projects, building an excellent technical team composed of young and middle-aged骨干 (key members). 2. Optimize the structure of the technical team, elevate its level. New recruits must hold a doctoral degree or higher. High academic qualifications and overseas training experience are required for position appointments and key post assignments. 3.
