**Department Website:** http://www.bonetumor.cn/ **Department Overview:** The Department of Bone Tumor Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is the first specialized department dedicated to the treatment of bone tumors in South China. A large number of patients with bone and soft tissue tumors from Guangdong and neighboring provinces seek treatment here, giving the department a distinct advantage and excellent reputation in the region. Building upon the clinical research initiated by the esteemed senior orthopedist Professor Huang Chengda, who made outstanding contributions to the field of bone tumors in China, and through interdisciplinary integration with pathology, oncology, radiology, biology, materials science, and related disciplines, our department has continuously achieved new breakthroughs in both clinical practice and scientific research. We have gradually developed specialized characteristics with leading basic research and clinical techniques, establishing ourselves as the most authoritative center for the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors in South China. Due to the diversity and complexity of bone tumors, misdiagnosis is common. Since the 1960s, our department has been a pioneer in China in advocating a diagnostic approach that integrates clinical, radiological, and pathological discussions for bone tumors. Regular "triple-combination" discussions ensure diagnostic accuracy, significantly improving the differential diagnosis of complex bone tumor cases and preventing misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Standardized diagnosis and treatment of bone tumors based on this triple-combination approach represent a major advantage of our department both provincially and nationally. We have promoted this technique to numerous institutions across the country with excellent results. To improve the diagnostic and treatment capabilities for bone and soft tissue tumors in hospitals at various levels, our department successfully organized national continuing education courses on "Triple-Combination Diagnosis of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors" in 2009 and 2011, which received widespread acclaim. Professor Shen Jingnan, the department chair, serves as the Deputy Head of the Bone Tumor Group under both the Chinese Orthopaedic Association and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, and as the Head of the Bone Tumor Group under the Guangdong Orthopaedic Association. Leading the bone tumor team, he has secured 7 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) grants in the past three years and initiated 2 Sun Yat-sen University 5010 prospective clinical studies. The total funding from various levels exceeds 10 million RMB. His project, "Triple-Combination Diagnosis, Limb Salvage Treatment, and Basic Research of Malignant Bone Tumors," won the First Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award and the Second Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award in 2004. **Clinical Work:** The Department of Bone Tumor Surgery treats over 2,000 patients with various bone tumors annually (including chemotherapy) and performs 800 bone tumor surgeries. These include complex and high-difficulty limb salvage procedures, pelvic tumor resection and reconstruction, sacral tumor resection and reconstruction, and extendable limb salvage for malignant bone tumors in children, achieving a nationally advanced level. The triple-combination (clinical, radiological, pathological) diagnostic technique for bone tumors has been practiced for 30 years. Through collaborative efforts with the Departments of Pathology and Radiology, we have resolved numerous diagnostic challenges in bone tumors, with its format and effectiveness reaching an internationally advanced level. In terms of medical indicators, the annual number of inpatients exceeds 2,000, the bed occupancy rate is over 140%, and the average length of stay is 8 days. Given the department's high-level clinical capabilities, it has been designated as: a training base for clinical specialists by the Ministry of Health; a training base for specialists of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh; and a Clinical Pharmacology Base (including medical devices) of the National Medical Products Administration. **Scientific Research:** Scientific research is the driving force for the sustainable development of the discipline. The academic level and status of our bone tumor department are prominent both domestically and internationally. In the past three years, our department has obtained over 20 research grants from various levels. Notably, we have consecutively received 7 NSFC grants, 2 Sun Yat-sen University 5010 clinical research projects, and over 10 other provincial and ministerial-level grants, with total funding exceeding 10 million RMB. We publish an average of over 8 SCI articles annually, including over 3 articles with an impact factor above 4.0 per year. In 2012, Professor Shen Jingnan's research team, in collaboration with Professor Kang Tiebang's team from the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, completed research on the function of glycogen synthase kinase 3 in osteosarcoma. The research paper, "Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3β, NF-κB Signaling, and Tumorigenesis of Human Osteosarcoma," was published in the prestigious international oncology journal *Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI)* (IF: 14.79). The journal published an expert commentary on this article in the same issue (Woodgett JR. Can a Two-Faced Kinase be Exploited for Osteosarcoma?), highly affirming the value of the research findings. These scientific achievements demonstrate the overall high-level research advantage of our bone tumor department. Professors Shen Jingnan, Huang Gang, and Wang Jin from our department hold positions in relevant academic organizations at national and provincial levels. **Personnel Training:** Our department has a complete, high-quality, and high-level talent echelon, including 2 doctoral supervisors and 1 master's supervisor. The young and middle-aged technical骨干 possess strong professional competence, excellent educational and training backgrounds, and good development potential. 1. **Training Plan:** Physicians in the department undergo systematic, standardized training focused on improving clinical abilities, clinical operational skills, and research capabilities. Doctors with associate senior titles or above, after comprehensive study and training in various orthopedic subspecialties, determine their specific research or development direction, aiming to form unique characteristics and advantages in their specialized field. 2. **Training Direction:** Personnel with different professional titles select relatively stable development directions based on their professional strengths and characteristics. Young and middle-aged physicians are trained according to the discipline's development needs. 3. **Training Methods, Pathways, and Implementation:** * (1) Formulate development direction. * (2) Study, train, and collaborate on research at leading international institutions, aiming to cultivate globally-minded talent. * (3) Participate in the planning and implementation of major research projects. * (4) Attend and improve through advanced domestic training courses. * (5) For outstanding talents retained after graduation, emphasize comprehensive clinical and research qualities, with priority given to young individuals with international collaborative research backgrounds. * (6) Doctoral graduates retained by the department must pursue overseas study or collaborative research for at least one year within 10 years. * (7) Review and verify personnel development and performance every two years, adjusting training methods and directions accordingly. **Department Chair: Shen Jingnan** Current Positions: Deputy Head of the Bone Tumor Group, Chinese Orthopaedic Association & Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology; Head of the Bone Tumor Group, Orthopaedic Branch, Guangdong Medical Association; Standing Committee Member, Sarcoma Committee, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association; Standing Committee Member, Guangdong Orthopaedic Association; Standing Committee Member, Palliative Care Professional Committee, Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association; Member, Sarcoma Committee, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association; Deputy Director, Orthopaedic Surgeons Branch, Guangdong Medical Doctor Association; Editorial Board Member, *Chinese Journal of Joint Surgery*; Editorial Board Member, *Chinese Journal of Bone Tumor and Bone Disease*; Editorial Board Member, *The Journal of Practical Medicine*; Reviewer, *Chinese Journal of Trauma*; Reviewer, *Guangdong Medical Journal*.
