Department Details
### Basic Information of the Department
The Department of Spinal Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was established in early 2001. It is currently the specialized spinal diagnosis and treatment center in the province dedicated to treating various spinal disorders. Under the leadership of Professor Li Fobao, a renowned senior expert and academic leader in orthopedics and spinal surgery, our department has achieved a leading position domestically in terms of personnel allocation, professional competence, foreign language proficiency, medical and nursing quality, scientific research level, and equipment configuration. We have established friendly relations with the spinal surgery departments of Hirosaki University, Hokkaido University, and Nagoya University in Japan, with annual exchanges for learning and lectures. We will always adhere to the principle of "patient safety first, patient needs first, and surgical technical quality first," serving patients wholeheartedly.
### Clinical Work
**Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment**
1. Neck and shoulder pain, low back and leg pain: Cervical spondylosis, cervical spinal stenosis, thoracic spinal stenosis, lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis, lumbar muscle strain, lumbar facet joint disorder, cervical and lumbar instability, and senile osteoporosis.
2. Spinal deformities: Craniovertebral junction deformities (basilar invagination, congenital atlanto-occipital fusion, odontoid dysplasia, and short neck deformity), torticollis (muscular and osseous), scoliosis (congenital, idiopathic, and secondary), kyphosis (ankylosing spondylitis, Scheuermann's disease, angular kyphosis, etc.).
3. Spinal fractures: Jefferson fracture, odontoid fracture, Hangman's fracture, atlantoaxial dislocation, subaxial cervical spine fractures, thoracolumbar and sacrococcygeal fractures.
4. Spinal tumors: Vertebral tumors, intraspinal tumors (epidural, intradural extramedullary, or dumbbell-shaped).
5. Spinal infections: Tuberculous and pyogenic spondylitis, etc.
**Treatment Characteristics**
Combination of conservative and surgical treatments, integration of pharmacological and rehabilitation therapies, and combination of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine.
**Specialized Features**
1. Upper cervical spine surgery: Posterior C1/C2 laminar fixation and reduction, posterior or anterior atlantoaxial joint screw fixation for atlantoaxial dislocation, odontoid fracture screw fixation, posterior occipitocervical decompression and fixation.
2. Mid-lower cervical spine surgery: Anterior decompression and bone graft fusion with internal fixation, posterior double-door or single-door laminoplasty for spinal canal expansion, posterior lateral mass screw fixation, or one-stage anterior-posterior surgery.
3. Spinal deformity correction: Anterior or posterior internal fixation and correction for scoliosis, posterior spinal "V"-shaped osteotomy for kyphosis correction.
4. Posterior pedicle screw fixation, reduction, and bone graft fusion for lumbar spondylolisthesis.
5. Anterior or posterior decompression, reduction, and internal fixation for cervical, thoracic, and lumbar fractures.
6. Posterior fenestration discectomy for lumbar disc herniation and cervical radiculopathy.
7. Total vertebral tumor resection and spinal reconstruction.
8. Intraspinal tumor resection.
9. Conservative treatment for degenerative spinal diseases and osteoporosis.
10. Early rehabilitation intervention for traumatic paralysis post-surgery.
11. Minimally invasive surgeries such as percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, and endoscopic discectomy.
