The Reproductive Medicine Center, established in 1989, is a leading Chinese ART institution. It pioneered ICSI (1996) and PGD (2000), and performs over 4,000 IVF cycles annually with a ~45% pregnancy rate. The department also excels in human embryonic stem cell research and fertility preservation. It is a Ministry of Health-approved ART training base and Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory.

Department Details

### Basic Information of the Department The Reproductive Medicine Center was established in 1989, and its founder, Professor Zhuang Guanglun, is one of the most renowned scholars in the field of reproductive medicine in China. In 1997, the department was formally established by integrating the Gynecological Endocrinology specialty and the Family Planning Research Laboratory. Subsequently, the department achieved several landmark scientific accomplishments, including the pioneering establishment of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in 1996 and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in 2000, two landmark technologies that established the department's leading position in China. Additionally, the department was the first in China to apply transvaginal multifetal pregnancy reduction for early multiple pregnancies and was among the early pioneers in human embryonic stem cell research and human fertility preservation studies. Currently, the department has established a comprehensive system of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and is among the first batch of institutions in China to receive approval from the Ministry of Health for ART, as well as a training base for ART under the Ministry of Health, having trained a large number of reproductive medicine professionals nationwide. The department is also a key and specialized department of Guangdong Province and serves as the supporting unit for the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine. ### Clinical Work The reproductive medicine team possesses a solid foundation in gynecological reproductive endocrinology, mature superovulation monitoring techniques, as well as routine in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) technology, cell culture techniques, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), embryo biopsy techniques, and molecular biology diagnostic techniques. Currently, the department performs over 4,000 IVF-ET cycles annually, with a stable overall pregnancy rate of approximately 45%, and over 2,000 frozen embryo transfer cycles, with an overall pregnancy rate exceeding 40%. In addition, more than 1,300 artificial insemination cycles are conducted annually, with a cycle success rate of around 13%. In recent years, the department has expanded the application of its specialized technology—preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)—to include the diagnosis of various diseases such as α- and β-thalassemia, chromosomal translocations, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and spinal muscular atrophy. Since 2012, it has successfully applied PGD for HLA matching of embryos. Furthermore, the department's technology has been extended to multiple reproductive centers in Guangdong Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. ### Scientific Research The department places great emphasis on advancing scientific research, conducting in-depth studies in areas such as human embryonic stem cells, preimplantation genetic diagnosis technologies, germ cell/tissue cryopreservation, major reproductive endocrine diseases, and endometrial receptivity, achieving numerous significant results. Over the past five years, the department has applied for multiple provincial and ministerial-level research projects, including first- and second-level sub-projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology's 973 and 863 programs, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Health Fund, and provincial and municipal funds, with cumulative funding exceeding 10 million RMB. In the past five years, the department has published over 100 research papers in domestic and international professional journals, including more than 30 papers indexed in SCI, with publications in renowned journals such as *Human Reproduction*, *Molecular Human Reproduction*, *Fertility and Sterility*, *Prenatal Diagnosis*, *Cell Research*, *Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics*, and *Chinese Medical Journal*. ### Talent Development The department places great importance on talent development and the construction of a talent echelon, implementing a series of measures to ensure the quality of its training system. Doctoral students receive comprehensive training in research capabilities, clinical skills, and political and ideological education. Regular work reports and exchanges are conducted within research groups, and through hands-on research practice and encouragement to actively apply for research funding, students gain comprehensive research knowledge from the scientific community. From 2005 to 2012, the department enrolled 28 doctoral students and 41 master's students, with 28 doctoral students and 39 master's students graduating. As a training base for ART under the Ministry of Health, the center receives over 50 visiting scholars from across the country annually, training numerous key professionals in the field of reproductive medicine in China.
