Department Details
### Basic Information of the Department
The Department of Thoracic Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University originated from the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department established in 1976. In the 21st century, due to the rapid increase in patients with thoracic tumors and the need to adapt to the expansion of thoracic surgery services as well as the complexity and specialization of various diseases, the Thoracic Surgery Department was officially established on May 8, 2005.
The department has a team of medical staff with experience in both cardiac surgery and general thoracic surgery. It comprises two wards, including the main Thoracic Surgery Ward and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Ward at the Huangpu Campus, with a total of 50 beds. Among the staff, there are 8 physicians with senior professional titles, including 5 with the title of Chief Physician, 2 Attending Physicians, and 3 Resident Physicians.
### Clinical Work
The Department of Thoracic Surgery primarily diagnoses and treats common thoracic diseases, including benign and malignant lung tumors, benign and malignant esophageal tumors, mediastinal tumors, chest trauma, chest deformities, chest wall diseases, tracheal tumors, and chest trauma. It has particular advantages in the field of extended radical surgery for advanced, large, and complex thoracic tumors. The workload and surgical volume of the department have been steadily increasing at an annual rate of approximately 20%. Each year, about 1,300 patients are admitted, with an annual growth rate exceeding 10%. Nearly 900 major and minor surgeries are performed annually, with an annual growth rate exceeding 10%. Among these, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, and myasthenia gravis, which are the mainstay diseases of thoracic surgery, account for over 64% of cases. The patient cure and improvement rate reaches 98%. Through the efforts of all medical staff, patient satisfaction with medical services exceeds 99%. The volume, mode, and variety of surgeries have reached an advanced domestic level. For example, in June 2005, Professor Luo Honghe, the department director, performed a pulmonary artery sarcoma stripping and right total pneumonectomy under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. Minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for thoracic diseases has reached a domestic and even international level, with mature techniques for thoracoscopic single lobectomy, bilobectomy, and esophagectomy. Recently, 3D thoracoscopic surgery technology has been successfully implemented with good results. In recent years, the treatment of myasthenia gravis has gradually established the department as a surgical center in the South China region, demonstrating an advanced domestic treatment level.
### Scientific Research
In terms of scientific research, the main focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of common thoracic diseases such as thymic diseases, lung cancer, and esophageal cancer. The department emphasizes research management, implementing management adjustments and gradual improvements based on actual conditions to ensure standardized and orderly research activities. Since 2008, the department has obtained multiple national, provincial, municipal, and horizontal funds, with total funding exceeding 1.5 million RMB. More than 20 academic papers are published annually, including approximately 5-8 SCI papers per year. Additionally, 3-5 monographs are edited or co-edited each year.
### Talent Development
In terms of talent development, the department sends personnel at various levels to attend major domestic and international academic conferences each year, where they deliver special reports. The department recruits 3-5 new master's students annually. It also accepts 2-6 thoracic surgery trainees from across the country each year.
