### Department Overview The Department of Pediatric Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was established in the 1950s by Professor Lai Bingyao, one of the first-generation pediatric surgery experts in China. It is one of the earliest specialized pediatric surgery departments in the country. In 2010, the department was recognized as a standardized residency training base for pediatric surgery in Guangdong Province. The department currently has 33 staff members, including 13 physicians, 4 senior-level professors, 5 associate senior-level professors, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 3 master's supervisors. Among the physicians, 7 hold doctoral degrees and 2 hold master's degrees. The department has 47 inpatient beds and performs 1,632 inpatient surgeries annually. ### Clinical Work The department primarily treats conditions related to the pediatric digestive system, urinary system, vascular tumors, and malignant solid tumors in children. It provides prenatal assessment and planned treatment for fetal gastrointestinal and urinary tract malformations, as well as tumors. Over decades of effort by multiple generations, the department has become a diagnostic and treatment center for complex and rare pediatric surgical diseases in Guangdong Province, extending its influence to neighboring provinces and bringing hope to countless children with surgical conditions. Each year, a large number of children with severe, complex, and rare diseases are referred from outside the province, establishing the department as one of the leading pediatric surgery centers for clinical care, education, and research in South China. ### Scientific Research The department currently has five active research grants, totaling 170,000 RMB. ### Talent Development The department has trained 11 doctoral students and 56 master's students, and admits 1-2 visiting scholars annually. ### Department Director Professor Liu Juncheng, Chief Physician, Master's Supervisor. He serves as a Standing Committee Member of the Pediatric Tumor Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Branch of the Pediatric Tumor Professional Committee of the Anti-Cancer Association, and Vice Chairman of the National Pediatric Hepatobiliary Group. He is also the Vice Chairman of the 7th Guangdong Pediatric Surgery Branch, Chairman of the Pediatric Surgery General Surgery Group in Guangdong, and a Standing Committee Member of the Guangdong Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Pediatric Branch. He is an editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Pediatric Surgery, the Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics, and the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Surgery. ### Deputy Department Director Zhou Li, Chief Physician, Doctoral Supervisor. He serves as a member of the Pediatric Surgery Society of the Chinese Medical Association, a Standing Committee Member of the 7th Guangdong Pediatric Surgery Branch, a member of the National Pediatric Urology Group, Chairman of the Guangdong Pediatric Surgery Urology Group, a Standing Committee Member of the Guangdong Branch of the Pediatric Tumor Professional Committee of the Anti-Cancer Association, and an editorial board member of the Journal of General Surgery Literature.
