### Basic Department Information The Department of Urology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a key discipline of higher education institutions in Guangdong Province, a key discipline of the Guangdong Province "Five Ones" Project, a hospital-level key discipline of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, a key discipline of higher education institutions in Guangdong Province, and a standardized training base for specialist physicians designated by the Ministry of Health. Among the 17 attending physicians, there are 9 professors and doctoral supervisors, and 5 associate professors and master's supervisors, each with their own research directions, ensuring the sustained and independent capacity to cultivate high-level talents comparable to international advanced standards. There are 20 nurses on staff, including 2 with associate senior professional titles and 1 with an intermediate professional title. ### Clinical Work The Department of Urology is equipped with general wards, an Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) room, a Urodynamics Examination Room, a Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) Examination Room, an Outpatient Cystoscopy Room, a Urology Research Laboratory, a Medical Multimedia Production Room, a Urology Specialist Outpatient Clinic, and an Andrology Outpatient Clinic. It currently has nearly 100 general hospital beds and is equipped with advanced medical equipment such as electronic laparoscopes, an Ultrasonic Lithotripsy and Stone Clearance System (EMS), a Holmium Laser Therapy Device, a Thulium Laser Therapy Device, a Radiofrequency Tissue Ablation System, a Microwave Ablation Therapy Device, a Urodynamics Analyzer, a Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) Resectoscope, a Plasma Resectoscope, Cystoscopes, Ureteroscopes, Percutaneous Nephroscopes, a Nocturnal Penile Tumescence (NPT) Monitoring Device, a Sperm Analyzer, an Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripter, a Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) device, and Medical Multimedia Production Equipment. The annual outpatient volume of the Department of Urology is nearly 50,000 visits, with the Andrology Specialist Clinic seeing 5,000 visits annually. Over 1,000 cystoscopies and minor surgical procedures are performed each year. More than 1,000 general urological surgeries are performed annually, along with 250 ESWL procedures, nearly 1,000 TRUS examinations and biopsies, and approximately 400 male sexual function assessments and urodynamic studies each. The Department of Urology comprises six sub-specialties: Urogenital Tumors, Andrology, Urolithiasis, Prostate Diseases, Urinary Control and Urethral Reconstruction, and Kidney Transplantation. Building upon our fine traditions, with minimally invasive urological techniques as our core focus, we continuously develop various new technologies and methods, leading to the vigorous growth and enhancement of our urological service capabilities and standards. Our department can independently and successfully perform all routine and complex clinical urological procedures. These include open surgeries: Adrenal Tumor Resection, Radical Nephrectomy, Partial Nephrectomy, Pyeloplasty, Pyelolithotomy, Nephroureterectomy, Ureterolithotomy, Ureteroneocystostomy, Partial Cystectomy, Radical Cystectomy, Urinary Diversion, Radical Prostatectomy, Radical Orchiectomy, Partial Penectomy, Radical Penectomy, Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection, Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection, Inguinal Lymph Node Dissection; Transurethral Endoscopic Surgeries: TURP, Laser Prostatectomy, TURBT, Internal Urethrotomy, Ureteroscopy; Percutaneous Nephroscopic Surgery: Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL); Laparoscopic Surgeries (Conventional Laparoscopy, Mini-laparoscopic Retroperitoneoscopy, Single-port Laparoscopy): Adrenal Tumor Resection, Radical Nephrectomy, Partial Nephrectomy, Pyeloplasty, Radical Prostatectomy, Radical Cystectomy, etc. Beyond the standard clinical procedures of tertiary hospitals, our department can also independently and successfully perform several complex clinical procedures, such as surgery for recurrent giant pheochromocytoma and adrenocortical carcinoma, recurrent bladder cancer resection with neobladder construction, nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, ejaculation-preserving retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, surgery for complex urinary fistulas, posterior urethral stricture repair, urethroplasty, urethral sling procedures, allograft kidney transplantation, living donor kidney transplantation, pediatric kidney transplantation, multi-organ cluster transplantation, repeat kidney transplantation, surgery for various complex hypospadias and epispadias/exstrophy, pediatric hydronephrosis surgery, and microsurgical techniques in andrology. The diagnosis and treatment techniques for multiple diseases have reached an advanced domestic level. Notably, the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal tumors are particularly distinctive, with techniques reaching a leading domestic and internationally advanced level. ### Scientific Research In the past three years, the academic leaders and team have published over 200 papers in core domestic and international journals, including 74 articles indexed in SCI, of which more than 50 are clinical articles. The total impact factor of the clinical articles exceeds 100. They have edited 4 monographs, secured over 40 research grants, including 8 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) grants (10 NSFC grants in the last 5 years), and have won multiple Science and Technology Progress Awards from the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province, and Guangzhou City. The four edited monographs include: *Operative Urology* (3rd Edition), *Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Protocols for Urological Diseases* (1st Edition), *Clinical Kidney Transplantation*, and *Clinical Urology and Andrology*. ### Talent Development Based on the completion of degree education for all departmental staff (all young doctors have obtained doctoral degrees), senior and mid-level professional title holders have undertaken one-year overseas study programs to stay abreast of international advanced technologies and further refine their professional focus areas. Under the overall coordination of the department and aligned with its development direction, staff have developed expertise in urogenital tumors, andrology, urolithiasis, prostate diseases, urinary control and urethral reconstruction, and kidney transplantation. To date, nearly 60 doctoral students and nearly 50 master's students have graduated. Annually, the department undertakes the teaching of theoretical courses, animal experiments, clinical clerkships, and internships for Chinese and English classes of clinical medicine and nursing undergraduates at Sun Yat-sen University. It also accepts 15 visiting urologists from hospitals across China each year. The department regularly holds an annual "Urology New Technologies and Advances Training Course," a quarterly "South China Minimally Invasive Training Course," and weekly academic lectures on difficult case discussions, new technologies, and recent advances. Through exchanges with domestic and international peers, the discipline has achieved leapfrog development.
