### Department Overview:
The Department of Neurosurgery was established in 1958. Through the efforts of several generations, it has grown into a well-established department, serving as a site for master's and doctoral degree programs as well as a clinical postdoctoral research station. It currently has 88 inpatient beds, including 8 specialized ICU beds. The department is staffed by over 60 medical professionals, including 23 physicians, among whom are 5 senior professionals (professors, etc.), 13 associate professors, 5 doctoral supervisors, and 6 master's supervisors. Currently, there are 7 doctoral students, 8 master's students, and 1 international student enrolled. In terms of clinical practice, teaching, and research, our department has consistently maintained a leading position in neurosurgery within Guangdong Province and even the South China region. It is the host institution for the Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Pituitary Adenoma Cooperative Group, the Chairman of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association, and the Chairman of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association. The department currently includes 1 member of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, 1 member of the Endovascular Treatment Group of the Chinese Neurosurgical Society, 1 Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Pituitary Adenoma Cooperative Group, 1 member of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and several members of the Spinal Cord and Spine Expert Committee and the Neuromodulation Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association.
### Clinical Work:
Since the late 1950s, the department was among the early adopters in China to perform surgical treatment for craniocerebral tumors. In the mid-1980s, it introduced micro-neurosurgery, which has since become a routine surgical procedure. Currently, the department performs nearly 1,700 surgeries annually. It has accumulated extensive experience in the high-level diagnosis and treatment of pituitary adenomas, cerebrovascular diseases, skull base tumors, spinal cord diseases, congenital craniocerebral diseases, and severe traumatic brain injuries. In particular, the department has achieved or approached nationally leading levels in endovascular interventional and microsurgical treatments for cerebrovascular diseases, as well as microsurgery for complex intracranial tumors such as giant refractory pituitary adenomas, skull base tumors, acoustic neuromas, brainstem and deep midline tumors, and complex spinal cord diseases, yielding significant social benefits. The department is now equipped with a comprehensive set of internationally advanced neurosurgical microsurgical equipment and instruments, including 4 Zeiss OPMI Pentero and Zeiss NC4 auto-focusing balance stand surgical microscopes, a BrainLAB neuronavigation system, a neuroendoscope, an intraoperative digital subtraction angiography machine, a multifunctional neuroelectrophysiological monitoring system, a CUSA, 3 multifunctional neurosurgical specialty beds, 6 Mayfield head clamps, high-speed pneumatic drills, and irrigating bipolar coagulators. Currently, an investment of 60 million RMB is being made to procure world-class advanced equipment such as an intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging system and two high-end surgical microscopes.
### Scientific Research:
The department has conducted long-term and in-depth research in multiple hot and challenging areas of neurosurgery, including cerebrovascular diseases, pituitary adenomas, intracranial tumors, intramedullary spinal cord lesions, and functional neurosurgery, achieving remarkable results. It has received 3 second prizes for Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Awards, namely "Clinical and Basic Research on Endovascular Treatment of Cerebrovascular Diseases," "Prevention, Surgical Treatment, and Clinical Basic Experimental Research on Cerebrovascular Diseases," and "Clinical and Basic Research on Pituitary Adenomas." It has also received 2 third prizes for Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, namely "Vascular Embolization Techniques for Complex and Refractory Carotid-Cavernous Sinus Fistulas" and "Stereotactic Localization of Pituitary Microadenomas and Transsphenoidal Microsurgical Techniques." The department has successively undertaken 10 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as multiple projects from the Doctoral Program Foundation of the Ministry of Education and key industry-university-research projects of Guangdong Province, with total funding approaching 10 million RMB. It has published over 200 original research articles in SCI-indexed core professional journals. The Pituitary Tumor Research Laboratory is a key medical laboratory in Guangdong Province. The department has also co-authored 10 monographs, including "Glioma," "Modern Surgery," and "Essentials of Diagnosis and Treatment of Intracranial Tumors." In November 2001, the department successfully performed the first case in China and the 36th case worldwide of separation surgery for conjoined twins (Type D), which garnered widespread attention from domestic and international peers and media.
