The Pain Department of Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is one of the pain disciplines with the longest history in Shanghai. It was founded in 1988 by the nationally renowned Professor Hang Yannan. In 2013, Professor Wang Xiangrui served as the second chairman of the Pain Medicine Specialty Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association. In 2023, Professor Yu Weifeng served as the chairman of the 14th Committee of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Over more than thirty years, the medical, teaching, and research work of the Pain Department of Renji Hospital has developed comprehensively and continuously. It receives a large number of chronic pain patients from home and abroad every year, undertakes teaching tasks for undergraduates and clinical medical students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University-Ottawa Joint Medical College, relies on the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Anesthesiology to carry out basic pain research projects, presides over multiple national and provincial-level projects, and cooperates with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of Shanghai for Science and Technology to carry out medicine-engineering interdisciplinary projects. Since 2018, it has successfully applied for national and Shanghai continuing education projects, held the branded conference "Renji Forum on Pain Neuroscience and Clinical Translation," and conducted the special training course "New Advances in Pain Neuromodulation," gathering pain medicine experts from around the world for lectures and exchanges. Combining simulated practical ultrasound teaching, animal simulated surgery training, and PBL teaching discussions, it is fully committed to cultivating young pain medicine talents. It has translated and published "Fundamentals of Pain Medicine" and "Mechanisms, Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuropathic Pain," established a continuing education course series for the Pain Department, and taught pain medicine knowledge and trained ultrasound-guided nerve block techniques for visiting doctors and standardized residency training doctors from all over the country. The Pain Department of Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine currently covers the East Hospital, West Hospital, South Hospital, and Internet Hospital, as well as medical alliance units such as Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Hospital, Baoshan Dachang Hospital, Wuxi SK Hospital, Punan Hospital, and Pujiang Hospital. The Pain Department has distinctive diagnostic and treatment characteristics and has established seven specialized clinics: postherpetic neuralgia, cancer pain, chronic low back pain, trigeminal neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy pain, intractable pain diseases, and pain ultrasound diagnosis and treatment. In the outpatient clinic, analgesic physiotherapy is routinely carried out, including shock wave therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, high-energy laser, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and ultrasound-guided pain injection therapy. In the day surgery management system of Renji Hospital, internationally standardized image-guided minimally invasive interventional analgesic surgeries are carried out, including percutaneous balloon compression of the trigeminal ganglion (PBC), radiofrequency ablation for pain, percutaneous kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty (PKP/PVP), transforaminal endoscopic minimally invasive discectomy, plasma ablation, unilateral biportal endoscopic spinal canaloplasty (UBE), platelet-rich plasma injection (PRP), and others. In the ward, patients with difficult and severe pain are admitted. It has taken the lead in carrying out domestically advanced neuromodulation technologies and has accumulated rich experience in spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and intrathecal drug infusion system implantation (PUMP IMPLANT), solving the difficult problem of severe intractable pain, providing safe and effective analgesia, and improving quality of life. The Pain Department of Renji Hospital is enthusiastic about public science popularization and public welfare. In 2018, it created the WeChat public account "Renji Pain Medicine Exchange." Since its operation, it has regularly published original high-quality pain medicine popular science and teaching posts, with nearly 3,000 subscribers, covering the whole country, and has been well received and reposted by many media outlets. Every year on "World Pain Day," it holds large-scale science popularization and free consultation activities, and holds offline public welfare lectures every month, going into communities in Puxi, Pudong, and Pujiang Town. It has accepted interviews from Wenhui Daily and People's Daily and published feature reports; recorded science popularization programs on Shanghai Radio's "Living Past One Hundred Years," the TV program "X Clinic," and new media platforms such as "Haishang Famous Doctors." After broadcasting, these programs received strong social responses, effectively promoting medical common knowledge and scientific and technological progress, and won praise from citizens. The Pain Department of Renji Hospital is rich in talent, with a large number of outstanding young medical talents and pain specialty nursing talents. The proportion of doctors with doctoral degrees reaches 50%, and doctors under 45 years old account for 83%.
