The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) of Peking University Cancer Hospital is a medical technology platform department under the vertical management of the Nursing Department. In September 1995, with the establishment of Peking University Cancer Hospital, the Central Supply Unit was also established, ending the hospital's previous lack of a formal supply unit. In October 2021, the Central Supply Unit was officially renamed the "Central Sterile Supply Department." The department currently has 21 staff members, including 1 head nurse and 14 nurses. Among the nursing staff, there is 1 associate chief nurse, 4 nurse-in-charge, 5 senior nurses, and 5 nurses; 9 hold bachelor's degrees, and 6 hold associate degrees; there are 6 support staff. The head nurse, Kang Jie, currently serves as the Secretary of the Sterile Supply Center Professional Committee of the Chinese Nursing Association, Vice Chair of the Sterile Supply Center Professional Committee of the Beijing Nursing Association, and a member of the Hospital Infection Management Professional Committee of the Chinese Hospital Association. Nurse Qiao Anyu serves as a Youth Committee member of the Sterile Supply Professional Committee of the Beijing Nursing Association. The department currently has 4 specialized nurses in sterile supply certified by the Beijing Nursing Association and 3 specialized nurses in sterile supply certified by the Chinese Nursing Association. Head nurse Kang Jie and nurse Shang Yan are responsible for teaching in the Beijing Nursing Association's Sterile Supply Specialist Nurse Program, and head nurse Kang Jie also teaches in the Chinese Nursing Association's Sterile Supply Specialist Nurse Program.
The CSSD implements centralized management and is responsible for the supply of sterile items to 21 clinical wards (surgical and non-surgical departments), 7 clinical ward platform departments, 6 special departments, 6 specialized outpatient clinics, and 23 operating rooms. The department has an independent area with a scientifically and rationally designed architectural layout that complies with the requirements of WS 310 "Management Standard for Hospital Central Sterile Supply Department." The auxiliary areas and work areas are clearly demarcated, with physical barriers between them, ensuring that items flow from contaminated to clean without cross-contamination or backflow, and that air flows from clean to contaminated areas.
The department currently has 6 high-temperature pulsating vacuum sterilizers, 6 fully automatic washer-disinfectors, 1 large washer-disinfector, 2 low-temperature hydrogen peroxide (plasma) sterilizers, 1 ethylene oxide sterilizer, 1 high-pressure steam cleaner, 3 ultrasonic cleaners, 3 water treatment systems, 4 sealing machines, 5 biological indicators readers, and 3 drying cabinets. It has achieved standardized technical operating procedures and information-based quality traceability for all stages of sterile item processing, including cleaning and disinfection, inspection and packaging, sterilization, and distribution. This enables full lifecycle management of surgical instruments and warehouse-style information management of sterile items. The department has established 41 regulations, 21 job responsibilities and detailed rules, 61 operating procedures, 26 equipment operating procedures, and 22 emergency plans. Adhering to the principle of "Serving Clinical Needs with Quality as the Foundation," the department focuses on the demands of frontline clinical staff and prioritizes patient safety. It emphasizes communication and connection with clinical departments, constructs a two-way satisfaction service evaluation system, and continuously improves to meet clinical needs.
