The Endoscopy Center of Peking University Cancer Hospital is one of the earliest independent specialized endoscopy departments established within oncology hospitals in China. After more than 30 years of development, the Endoscopy Center, as a platform department under the Department of General Surgery providing full-process endoscopic diagnosis and treatment services to the entire hospital, has evolved into a specialized oncology endoscopy center characterized by interventional diagnosis and treatment of the digestive and respiratory systems. Its services include: precision endoscopic examination of early gastrointestinal tumors, endoscopic resection of early gastrointestinal tumors (ESD, combined endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery, and other ESD-derived techniques), biopsy of deep tissue and organ lesions (EUS-FNA, EBUS-TBNA, EBUS-GS-TBLB), treatment of benign and malignant biliary obstruction (ERCP, EUS-BD, cholangioscopic tumor photodynamic ablation), management of gastrointestinal obstruction (stent placement, intestinal obstruction catheter, stricture dilation, gastrostomy, feeding tube placement/fistula drainage), management of airway obstruction (stent placement, ablation recanalization), rigid bronchoscopy, double-balloon enteroscopy, peroral cholangioscopy, and capsule endoscopy. Many of these techniques are at the forefront internationally and domestically. As of the end of 2024, the Endoscopy Center has 14 physicians, 21 nursing staff, 1 medical technician, 1 medical secretary, 1 postdoctoral fellow, and 1 support staff. Among them, there are 4 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians, and 3 resident physicians; 2 are master's degree supervisors. Professional society appointments of the department members include: National Committee Member and Youth Committee Member of the Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy, Vice Chair of the Tumor Endoscopy Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Vice Chair of the Photodynamic Therapy Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) and Member of the Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor Committee, Member of the Digestive Endoscopy Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and Standing Committee Member and Youth Committee Member of the Beijing Society of Digestive Endoscopy. Team members have frequently delivered keynote speeches, performed live surgical demonstrations, and presented posters at domestic and international professional academic conferences. In 2025, the Endoscopy Center became one of the first partner units of the National Health Commission's Full-Time Training Program for Digestive Endoscopy Physicians. It also serves as a Digestive Endoscopy Training Center of the Beijing Society of Digestive Endoscopy and a member unit of the National Early Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention and Control Center Alliance. Over the past five years, it has trained more than 60 visiting physicians/trainees nationwide and has undertaken the Beijing "Chronic Disease Health Management · Cancer Screening and Early Diagnosis Training" project, training over 240 participants cumulatively. In the last 10 years, the Endoscopy Center has successively undertaken multiple projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Capital Health Development Special Projects. It has also undertaken over 30 research projects/grants from the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Beijing Hospital Authority, and the Organization Department of the Beijing Municipal Committee, with a cumulative research funding of 4.94 million RMB. It has published over 40 SCI papers with a total impact factor of over 170, and more than 10 papers in Peking University core journals. The center has organized and participated in the development of multiple domestic endoscopic diagnosis and treatment guidelines/consensuses. Since 2024, the Endoscopy Center has undertaken the construction of a national-level regional medical center, with permanently assigned department members at the Inner Mongolia and Yunnan branches, providing long-term targeted support for local endoscopic diagnosis and treatment. This has received widespread recognition from other departments in the branch hospitals and numerous positive reviews from local patients.
