Department Details
The Department of Nuclear Medicine at Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in 1976. Zhang Meiying, Vice Chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, led the department from 1979 to 2008. The current director, Yang Zhi, has been in charge since 2008. As of November 2025, the department has 68 staff members, including 10 postdoctoral fellows; 15 with senior professional titles, 36 with intermediate titles, and 38 with doctoral degrees, covering the full spectrum of medical, technical, nursing, chemical, and physical fields. The department has 4 doctoral supervisors and 3 master's supervisors. Current equipment includes 3 PET/CT scanners (including one total-body 2-meter PET/CT), 2 SPECT(/CT) scanners, 1 PET/MR scanner, 1 cyclotron, 1 small animal PET/CT scanner, 6 synthesis modules, and 2 automatic injection vehicles. The department offers 25 nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Over the past five years, it has performed more than 16,000 PET/CT(MR) imaging studies per year, over 9,000 SPECT(/CT) imaging studies per year, and over 100 therapeutic procedures per year.
Departmental Specialties: 1. Sentinel lymph node imaging for breast cancer and cutaneous melanoma using 99mTc-rituximab. 2. Specific imaging and radionuclide targeted therapy for neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer. 3. Development of next-generation PET nuclides and multimodal molecular probes. As a master's and doctoral degree granting site and postdoctoral research station for Imaging and Nuclear Medicine at Peking University, and a Beijing standardized training base for nuclear medicine residents, the department has continuously hosted fourteen sessions of the national continuing education program "Yanjing Tumor Clinical and PET/CT Application Conference" and has conducted the "Novel Nuclear Medicine Molecular Probe Quality Control and Clinical Translation" training course for nine consecutive years. The department has undertaken and participated in 1 National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program) project. In the past decade, it has undertaken 8 National Key R&D Programs, 1 non-confidential project from the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, 1 key project from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), over 20 general and youth projects from NSFC, 1 key project from the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, 1 key interdisciplinary project, 1 project under the "National Ten Thousand Talents Program" for Young Top-notch Talents, 1 project for the Young Beijing Scholar, 12 general/youth projects, 2 projects under the Beijing Science and Technology Nova Program, 1 project under the Beijing Young "Top-notch Talent" Program, 2 projects under the "Sailing Plan", 1 project under the "Beijing Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents Plan", 2 projects under the "Summit Plan", and numerous projects under the Capital Development Fund, with total research funding exceeding 30 million RMB. The department has published over 400 research papers, including over 300 in SCI-indexed journals. It has received 1 First Prize, 1 Second Prize, and 1 Third Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 First Prize of the Health Bureau Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 Second Prizes of the National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, 2 Third Prizes of the Huaxia Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Second Prize of the Beijing Medical Science and Technology Award, and has been granted 28 national invention patents, with 5 patents achieving technology transfer.
The department possesses robust disciplinary platform qualifications. It currently serves as the chair unit of the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Beijing Medical Association, the supporting unit for the Beijing Nuclear Medicine Quality Control and Improvement Center, the chair unit of the Radiopharmaceutical Branch of the Chinese Nuclear Society, the Key Laboratory for Radiopharmaceutical Research and Evaluation of the National Medical Products Administration, the Radiopharmaceutical Research and Development and Clinical Application Center of the China Atomic Energy Authority, the Beijing Key Laboratory for Radiopharmaceutical Research, Testing, and Evaluation, the Nuclear Medicine Professional Base of the National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, and the ICPO-PKUCH (International Centers for Precision Oncology - Peking University Cancer Hospital) Diagnosis and Treatment Center.
Adhering to the philosophy of "driven by clinical needs, centered on medical quality, using projects to drive clinical practice, and leveraging clinical practice to promote research," the Department of Nuclear Medicine pursues excellence in both clinical service and scientific research, jointly fostering the advancement of the nuclear medicine discipline.
