The Ultrasound Department of Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in 1979. It is a key discipline supported by the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau and an independent department integrating ultrasound diagnosis and ultrasound-guided interventional therapy. Its diagnostic and therapeutic scope is comprehensive, covering the abdomen, heart, pelvis, superficial organs, peripheral vessels, chest, lungs, head, neck, and extremities. Currently, the department has a well-structured personnel梯队, including 5 chief physicians, 1 professor, 8 associate chief physicians, 12 attending physicians, and 5 physicians, of whom 22 hold doctoral or master's degrees. Additionally, there are 4 technicians and nurses. The department boasts strong technical expertise and serves as a vice-chairman and standing committee member unit of the Ultrasound Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, achieving notable accomplishments in clinical care, research, and education.
In clinical practice, the department has extensive experience in ultrasound diagnosis, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, and interventional diagnosis and treatment, earning a prestigious reputation nationwide. In 1982, the department pioneered ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology, fluid aspiration, and intratumoral drug injection for local treatment in China. Subsequently, it introduced new techniques for ultrasound-guided biopsy of lesions in the liver, spleen, kidney, pancreas, chest, lungs, breast, thyroid, lymph nodes, and superficial tumors. To date, over 33,000 ultrasound-guided biopsies have been performed.
Following the initial introduction of ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation for liver cancer in China in 1999, the department successively developed ultrasound-guided ablation techniques for solid tumors in multiple organs, including the kidney and thyroid. The department has achieved multiple innovations in the field of radiofrequency ablation for liver cancer, with tumor inactivation rates and patient survival rates reaching internationally advanced levels. The department is equipped with a dedicated interventional ultrasound treatment room featuring a Class 100,000 laminar flow clean environment with controlled temperature and humidity, fully meeting the requirements for minimally invasive surgeries.
In 2003, the department was the first in China to apply ultrasound contrast agents for diagnosing lesions in the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidney, pelvis, breast, thyroid, and lymph nodes, thereby improving the differential diagnosis rate. Over 32,000 examinations have been performed. The department first proposed diagnostic criteria for contrast-enhanced ultrasound in Chinese patients with liver diseases and its application value in interventional diagnosis and treatment. Currently, contrast-enhanced ultrasound technology is widely used in diagnosing various diseases, guiding biopsy, assisting catheter drainage, and routinely applied before, during, and after tumor ablation procedures.
The Ultrasound Department possesses strong research capabilities, having secured a total of 35 national and provincial-level research projects. It has published 349 papers, including 130 SCI-indexed papers, 6 in the top imaging journal *Radiology*, and 219 in Chinese core journals. The department has received 17 national, provincial, and military science and technology advancement awards. Significant achievements have been made in early diagnosis of liver cancer, standardized ablation therapy, and basic research to enhance ablation efficacy, with notable progress in the diagnosis of digestive system tumors.
The department is a doctoral degree-granting unit with 3 doctoral supervisors, having trained over 40 doctoral and master's students to date. It serves as a standardized residency training base and a tumor ablation training base, annually receiving visiting physicians and senior scholars from across the country, thereby improving the professional level of ultrasound physicians in regional and grassroots hospitals. The department has organized dozens of international seminars on new ultrasound technologies and interventional ultrasound training courses, and co-hosted 20 standardized tumor ablation training sessions with the Chinese Medical Association, each attended by approximately 100 participants, benefiting countless patients.
The Ultrasound Department is a cohesive team, honored with the "Worker Pioneer" award by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions in 2014. Chief Expert Professor Chen Minhua was awarded the "Pioneering Contribution Gold Medal" by the World Conference on Tumor Ablation in 2016, named one of the "Top Ten Health Guardians of the Capital" in 2011, and received honors such as the "Fifth Capital Moral Model" and "Beijing Role Model." In 2024, Professor Yang Wei was recognized as one of the first "National Outstanding Young Physicians" in China. All members of the Ultrasound Department will work together, seek common development, continuously strengthen discipline construction, and make greater contributions to hospital development and patient health.
