Department Details
The Comprehensive Research Ward of Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in the new era context of national strategies for innovative drug development and the promotion of research-oriented hospital development. Designed, planned, and constructed according to an entirely new concept, the ward features multiple independent functional zones. The main area is the research patient treatment unit, equipped with 28 treatment chairs and 3 treatment beds, arranged in designated zones, operating on an appointment system, and accommodating both inpatient and outpatient patients. The department also includes a dedicated clinical trial outpatient clinic, a quality control office, an independent examination room, a clinical trial blood collection room and ECG room, as well as -80°C and -20°C freezers and centrifuges, providing comprehensive support for conducting clinical research.
The Comprehensive Research Ward prioritizes medical safety and quality, staffed by a highly qualified full-time medical team comprising 5 physicians and 19 nurses. Medical practices are standardized in accordance with national and Beijing municipal quality control standards. The department has established and refined systems and measures for medical quality and safety management, along with improved emergency response SOPs, ensuring the safety and quality of clinical research.
Since its establishment in April 2023, the Comprehensive Research Ward has admitted clinical research patients from across the hospital, including patients in all Phase I-III drug clinical trials (IND studies) and investigator-initiated trials (IIT studies). Since its inception in 2023, the department has strictly managed patients in accordance with clinical trial requirements. In the first year, it admitted 49% of the hospital's total clinical trial inpatients. In 2024, the number of clinical trial patients admitted further increased, accounting for 66% of the hospital's total clinical trial inpatients. Additionally, the department conducts clinical trial blood collection and ECGs, provides dedicated processing and storage of research samples for clinical trial patients, and supports the full-process management of clinical trials. Through an information management system, it offers efficient, safe, and convenient services for the hospital's clinical research, providing strong support for building a world-class research-oriented hospital.
The Comprehensive Research Ward places great emphasis on discipline development and talent team building. The department director, Professor Xie Yuntao, is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of familial hereditary breast cancer, has led multiple major and general projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and has published over 60 research papers in journals such as JCO. In the two years since the department's establishment, significant progress has been made in scientific research. In 2024, the department was approved to undertake multiple projects, including the "Beijing Research Ward Excellence Plan Parallel Project" and the "Cultivation Plan" of the Beijing Hospitals Authority. Based on the research ward, key department personnel have published several SCI papers. Leveraging the department's clinical research database, they have analyzed clinical research development trends, supporting the advancement of clinical research at our hospital.
The Comprehensive Research Ward not only focuses on clinical research but also emphasizes patient education and humanistic care, adhering to the principle of creating "a place to ignite hope." It aims to rekindle hope in patients, enhance their medical experience, and provide a driving force for the hospital's innovative development.
