The Department of Supportive Care is the first sub-specialty department in China affiliated with a tertiary-level cancer hospital. The department has always adhered to internationally advanced diagnosis and treatment concepts, providing holistic, family-oriented, and continuous care for patients and their families/caregivers, offering comprehensive treatment and care encompassing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. The scope of work of the Department of Supportive Care includes providing disease and treatment information to cancer patients at various stages, analyzing the disease, weighing the pros and cons of treatment, assisting patients and families in making treatment decisions, delivering palliative medical treatment for the disease, alleviating symptoms, reducing suffering, and advocating for multi-disciplinary treatment (MDT). It designs "personalized" comprehensive management plans for patients throughout the entire treatment process. By integrating the expertise of multidisciplinary specialists, the department aims to focus on and improve patients' quality of life, thereby extending survival. It primarily targets patients who experience discomfort symptoms (such as pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, constipation, bone marrow suppression, and other treatment-related adverse reactions) during or after surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy, providing assessment, monitoring, control, and management. For patients without indications for surgery and/or radiotherapy/chemotherapy, those intolerant to adverse reactions of radiotherapy/chemotherapy, and those diagnosed with advanced (extensively metastatic) cancer upon initial detection, the department adopts a palliative treatment approach, aiming to alleviate or eliminate discomfort symptoms and provide symptomatic and supportive (nutritional, soothing) care. Additionally, it offers ongoing care and services to patients and their families. Furthermore, the department provides hospice care and consultation services for end-of-life cancer patients, helping them achieve a dignified death. The department has always advocated for supporting patients' out-of-hospital treatment/life, collaborating with medical alliance hospitals, and exploring hierarchical diagnosis and treatment, homogeneous management, and other measures to enhance continuity of care, effectively assisting patients and benefiting their families from hospital to grassroots levels. The main work of the Department of Supportive Care involves: cancer prevention screening, informing patients of disease and treatment-related information, managing symptoms and adverse reactions, palliative chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy for advanced cancer, integrated/comprehensive treatment for advanced cancer, management of cancer survivors, and hospice care consultation. Adhering to the service philosophy of Beijing Cancer Hospital, it is people-centered, providing multi-dimensional, comprehensive medical care and services to patients. Additionally, as members of the Head and Neck Tumor MDT Internal Medicine Group of Beijing Cancer Hospital, the department's staff participate in the screening, diagnosis, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and other comprehensive treatments for head and neck tumors, including thyroid cancer, oral cancers such as tongue cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, laryngeal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, salivary gland tumors (such as adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland), and metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck with unknown primary site.
