Department Details
The Department of Radiation Oncology (commonly referred to as the Radiotherapy Department) at Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in 1976. It is divided into four subgroups: Head and Neck, Thoracic, Abdominal, and Breast and Gynecologic Oncology. The department is capable of performing various advanced radiotherapy techniques and comprehensive antitumor therapies. It is particularly renowned for precision radiotherapy combined with concurrent drug therapy for a wide range of tumors across the body, stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for liver cancer, lung cancer, and oligometastases, as well as research in organ function preservation, microbiomics, and radiomics, achieving leading domestic and international levels. In recent years, over 5,000 patients receive radiotherapy annually, with more than 65,000 outpatient visits per year.
The department currently has a total of 156 staff members, including physicians, medical physicists, radiation therapists, nurses, and researchers. Among them, there are 11 chief physicians, 9 deputy chief physicians, 3 senior engineers (professor-level), 3 senior engineers, 2 deputy chief therapists, 1 deputy chief nurse, and 1 tenured associate professor. Staff hold important positions in over 30 major domestic and international academic organizations, including chairpersons and standing committee members. They have led the drafting or deeply participated in the formulation of 9 national/industry standards, published the series "Radiotherapy Standards and Target Volume Delineation for Tumors" and several authoritative textbooks, and produced a series of original research articles in international journals such as The Lancet series, JAMA series, Cell series, and IJROBP. In recent years, the department has undertaken 47 research projects, received multiple awards including the Science and Technology Award from the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and obtained 8 independent/cooperative authorized patents covering core aspects such as positioning, monitoring, and treatment.
The department is equipped with 2 CT simulators (including 1 spectral CT), 1 MRI simulator, 1 brachytherapy afterloader, and over 40 treatment planning systems. With the successive installation of the first domestic VMAT, TrueBeam, followed by EDGE, VitalBeam, and Ethos radiotherapy systems, the existing 7 linear accelerators can achieve sub-millimeter treatment precision and enable adaptive planning. The overall equipment and technology have reached internationally advanced levels, providing robust support for comprehensive precision radiotherapy.
As a national standardized residency training base for radiation oncology and a specialized physician standardized training base for radiation oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, the department offers courses such as "Fundamentals of Radiation Oncology." It has trained over 60 master's and doctoral students, with 9 postdoctoral fellows completing their programs, and annually receives over 60 visiting scholars and fellows. The department consistently organizes national-level continuing education programs, both offline and online, such as the "Radiotherapy Standards and Target Volume Delineation Training Course," as well as academic conferences like the ASTRO Post-Meeting Symposium, training over a thousand high-level radiotherapy professionals nationwide while maintaining a commitment to ongoing education.
The department continuously promotes humanistic care, striving to provide patients with a high-quality, efficient, and comfortable medical experience. In wards, outpatient clinics, and treatment rooms, it regularly organizes multidimensional science popularization, education, and wish-wall activities. Among these, the "Warm Harbor" series of activities led by the nursing team has been widely praised. The department has received honors such as the "Enteral Nutrition Demonstration Ward" awarded by the National Health Commission's Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center and the "Advanced Staff Small Home" awarded by the Beijing Educational Workers' Union.
