Department Details
The Department of Critical Care Medicine (ICU) was established in 1996 and currently has 10 open beds (divided into East and West wards), including positive and negative pressure rooms. It provides meticulous monitoring, precise treatment, and comprehensive care for high-risk patients during the peri-treatment period of tumors and critically ill patients. After nearly 30 years of continuous improvement, the department has evolved into a clinical unit integrating medical care, teaching, and research, safeguarding the treatment of cancer patients. The department is equipped with ample and advanced medical devices, including ventilators, multi-functional monitors, bedside blood purification machines, bronchoscopes, temporary cardiac pacemakers, pulse indicator continuous cardiac output monitoring (PiCCO), bedside ultrasound, high-flow oxygen therapy devices, blood gas analyzers, automatic sputum suction machines, and infusion pump management systems. It offers diagnostic and therapeutic services such as mechanical ventilation, circulatory support (invasive cardiac output monitoring), blood purification (renal replacement therapy, plasma exchange), percutaneous minimally invasive tracheostomy, temporary cardiac pacing, bedside critical care ultrasound, bronchoscopy and lavage, mild hypothermia, prone position ventilation, and point-of-care testing (blood gas analysis, procalcitonin, brain natriuretic peptide). The department treats approximately 900 patients annually, providing strong support for the management of critically ill patients in the hospital.
The Vascular Access Center (VAC), affiliated with the Department of Critical Care Medicine, was established in 2010 and is one of the earliest specialized vascular access management units in China. It is responsible for central venous catheterization (CVC), peripherally inserted central catheterization (PICC), venous port implantation, outpatient maintenance care, and management of catheter-related complications across the hospital. It serves as a specialized training base for intravenous therapy under the Chinese Nursing Association and the Beijing Nursing Association, and operates a professionally certified "Catheter Care Studio." The widespread use of ultrasound assistance and intracavitary electrocardiogram localization techniques has significantly reduced the incidence of complications.
The department currently has 16 physicians, including 5 with senior professional titles, 9 with doctoral degrees, and 2 with experience as visiting scholars abroad. There are 41 nurses (including 10 in the Vascular Access Center), comprising 1 deputy chief nurse, 23 supervising nurses, 31 with various specialized nurse certifications, and 2 medical secretaries.
The department serves as the chair unit of the Tumor Critical Care Medicine Professional Committee of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association. In the past five years, it has published 35 articles, including 17 indexed in SCI; undertaken 9 research projects; and applied for 13 patents.
