The Laboratory of the Center for Familial Hereditary Tumors was established in 2003. It currently has a staff of 7, including 1 professor, 3 associate researchers, and 1 senior technologist. There are 10 doctoral and master's students currently enrolled. The laboratory focuses on the pathogenesis and clinical translational research of familial hereditary breast cancer.
**Main Research Areas**
1. **Research on Breast Cancer Susceptibility Genes**
The laboratory has systematically conducted research on susceptibility genes for familial breast cancer in China. It was the first in the Beijing region to perform germline mutation testing of the BRCA1/2 genes in familial breast cancer, accumulating extensive experience in genetic testing and result interpretation. Through over 20 years of sustained effort, the mutation frequency and mutation spectrum of BRCA1/2 in Chinese breast cancer patients have been clarified. For the first time, the risk of breast cancer and contralateral breast cancer in Chinese BRCA1/2 mutation carriers was assessed. A Chinese familial hereditary tumor gene mutation database was established, and the first international contralateral breast cancer risk model was constructed, laying the foundation for establishing treatment standards for familial hereditary breast cancer in China.
2. **Clinical Testing Services**
The laboratory provides clinical testing services for the BRCA1/2 genes to individuals at high risk for breast cancer. Since 2009, it has provided BRCA1/2 gene testing services to over 1,000 individuals and offered corresponding breast cancer genetic counseling to those tested.
3. **Exploration of the Mechanisms of Hereditary Breast Cancer**
Based on omics, cellular, and animal experiments, the laboratory explores the cellular origin and pathogenesis of hereditary breast cancer, elucidates the mechanisms of BRCA1/2 mutation-driven breast cancer, identifies potential targets for early warning and intervention of breast cancer, and provides new insights for the early diagnosis and prevention of familial hereditary breast cancer.
The laboratory has published over 70 research papers in major international oncology journals such as *J Clin Oncol*, *Clin Cancer Res*, and *Ann Oncol*. It has undertaken nearly 40 research projects, including key projects under the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Major Research Plan, NSFC General Projects, the Ministry of Science and Technology Support Program, as well as projects from the Ministry of Personnel, the Ministry of Education, and the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission. It has trained over 40 master's and doctoral graduates.
