Department Details
The Department of Ultrasound at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, was established in 1958. Its founder and first director was the renowned medical ultrasound expert, Professor Xu Zhizhang, a lifelong professor. Under Professor Xu's leadership, the department achieved numerous milestones: initiating A-mode ultrasound diagnostic research in 1958, clinically applying manual contact B-mode ultrasound imaging in 1960, developing the M-mode echocardiograph in 1961, creating a vitamin C and sodium bicarbonate contrast agent in 1978 for clinical use, and introducing interventional ultrasound techniques in 1984, making significant contributions to the development of ultrasound medicine in China. The current director is Professor Wang Wenping, with Deputy Directors Chief Physician Huang Beijian and Chief Physician Ding Hong. Professor Xu Zhizhang served as the Chairman of the Ultrasound Medical Society of the Chinese Medical Association, and Professor Wang Wenping currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Ultrasound Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Several department members hold positions as standing committee members and committee members in national and local professional societies. The Shanghai Ultrasound Quality Control Center (established in 2000) and the Institute of Ultrasound Medicine and Engineering, Fudan University (established in 2003), are affiliated with our hospital.
Under the leadership of the academic leaders, the Department of Ultrasound has continuously refined and enriched the clinical and research aspects of its three subspecialties: abdominal ultrasound, superficial and vascular ultrasound, and interventional ultrasound. These subspecialties are led by three key academic figures who guide clinical and research work, forming a well-structured academic echelon comprising senior, middle-aged, and young professionals. The department currently has over 30 physicians, 3 technicians, and 2 nurses, with 34% holding associate senior titles or above and over 80% holding intermediate titles or above. Graduate degree holders account for 80%, including 6 with doctoral degrees and 4 currently pursuing doctoral degrees. The department operates approximately 30 examination rooms, including inpatient color Doppler ultrasound rooms, outpatient color Doppler ultrasound rooms, interventional ultrasound rooms, and specialized ultrasound rooms. It is equipped with nearly 40 ultrasound diagnostic devices and one microwave ablation and one laser ablation device, handling over 200,000 routine color Doppler ultrasound examinations annually and performing more than 3,500 interventional procedures per year. Over more than half a century, the department has grown from scratch, from weak to strong, and from single diagnostic services to integrated diagnosis and treatment, now developing into a well-equipped department with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic quality and a high reputation.
Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, is a national center for the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases, with a particular focus on liver tumor treatment and research. The Department of Ultrasound collaborates closely with clinical departments such as the Department of Liver Tumor Surgery and the Department of Liver Tumor Medicine. Since performing the first liver contrast-enhanced ultrasound in 1992, the department has played a pivotal role in the diagnosis and treatment of liver space-occupying lesions, especially small hepatocellular carcinoma, through over 20 years of relentless efforts. In recent years, the department has continuously explored and introduced new technologies, such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound, image fusion navigation, and elastography, innovating in the diagnosis of liver tumors. These new technologies, including contrast-enhanced ultrasound, have also been applied to the diagnosis of diseases in organs such as the kidneys, thyroid, breast, and blood vessels, yielding significant clinical results and greatly improving diagnostic accuracy for these organs, with thousands of contrast-enhanced examinations performed annually. As early as 1992, the department initiated local percutaneous ethanol injection therapy for liver cancer, and in 2002, it introduced microwave ablation therapy for liver cancer, accumulating extensive experience in local liver tumor treatment.
The Department of Ultrasound has always placed great emphasis on teaching and possesses strong teaching capabilities. It currently has 2 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors, undertaking multiple teaching responsibilities including training graduate students (including eight-year and seven-year programs), imaging base trainees, undergraduates, and visiting physicians. Over the past five years, it has trained 8 doctoral students and over 20 master's students, many of whom have been awarded as outstanding graduates by Shanghai or Fudan University. After graduation, they have been distributed to hospitals at various levels nationwide, becoming medical backbone in their professional fields. The department trains over 100 visiting physicians from across the country annually and organizes three national-level advanced ultrasound technology training courses each year, with over 150 participants annually.
In terms of research, under the leadership of academic leaders and key researchers, the department has completed numerous national and provincial-level scientific research projects. Over the past five years, it has received 15 grants, including from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission (5 projects), and the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission. In 2011 and 2004, the department's research achievements were awarded the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress First Prize and Third Prize, respectively. Over the past five years, it has published over 160 papers, including more than 50 SCI papers; edited or co-edited over 10 books; and translated one book. Several department members serve as editorial board members for core domestic journals.
