The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (Yanjiang Campus) Department of Ultrasound Medicine

Hospital: The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (Yanjiang Campus)

The hospital introduced A-mode ultrasound in 1959 and established a separate ultrasound room in 1980. Currently, the department has 18 staff members, including 1 chief physician and 5 associate chief physicians. It offers color Doppler ultrasound for chest, abdomen, heart, and vessels, as well as interventional ultrasound. Key advances include contrast-enhanced ultrasound (2005), transesophageal echocardiography (2009), and ultrasound-guided procedures. In 2013, the Medical Imaging Department wa

Department Details

【Development Overview】 Our hospital initiated ultrasound diagnostic techniques relatively early. In 1959, A-mode ultrasound-assisted diagnostic technology was introduced. In 1965, the Department of Internal Medicine established an ECG and ultrasound room. In 1980, a separate ultrasound room was set up, led by Dr. Yang Yang (later promoted to Associate Chief Physician), one of the first-generation ultrasound specialists in Guangdong Province, with a team of four staff members: Zhou Zhiyi, Mai Xiuhui, and Huang Guoying, under the Department of Internal Medicine. In 1981, abdominal ultrasound cross-sectional diagnosis was initiated. Drs. Li Jiansheng and Lu Manhong from the Cardiovascular Department undertook M-mode echocardiography examinations. In 1985, Dr. Lu Manhong pioneered cardiac ultrasound cross-sectional diagnosis. By 1987, the ultrasound room staff had increased to seven. Currently, the department has a total of 18 staff members, including 1 Chief Physician, 5 Associate Chief Physicians, 5 Attending Physicians, 5 Resident Physicians, 1 Nurse, and 1 Clerk; 2 hold doctoral degrees, and 7 hold master's degrees. It comprises three specialized groups: the Abdominal-Superficial Organ Group, the Interventional Ultrasound Group, and the Cardiovascular Group. 【Medical Work】 The main clinical services provided by this discipline include color Doppler ultrasound diagnosis of the chest and abdomen, superficial organs, heart, fetal heart, and blood vessels, as well as interventional ultrasound diagnosis and treatment. Since 2004, supported by the hospital's comprehensive HIS and PACS systems, all workstations have been used for image, text, and data processing. In the second half of 2005, contrast-enhanced ultrasound for detecting focal liver lesions was initiated, making our hospital the first municipal unit to offer this service. From 2007 to 2008, color Doppler ultrasound for abdominal and superficial organs began to expand. In 2007, the Mammotome system was used for breast mass excision and biopsy. From 2008 to 2010, two physicians were sent to the Provincial Heart Research Institute for further training. In 2009, transesophageal echocardiography was introduced, along with intraoperative monitoring and pre- and post-operative evaluation for congenital heart disease occlusion procedures. In the same year, ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage and stone extraction were initiated. In 2012, an interventional ultrasound room was established within the department, performing various ultrasound-guided procedures, such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound-guided lung tumor puncture biopsy. In 2013, the Medical Imaging Department, comprising Radiology, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine, was designated as a Key Specialty of Guangdong Province. From 2003 to 2013, the Ultrasound Diagnosis Department gradually acquired 13 color Doppler diagnostic systems, 4 two-dimensional black-and-white ultrasound diagnostic systems, and 1 bedside portable color ultrasound diagnostic system. New color Doppler diagnostic projects were continuously developed, and ultrasound workload increased year by year. 【Teaching Work】 The teaching tasks undertaken by our department's teaching and research office mainly include: "Ultrasound Diagnostics" for medical imaging associate degree programs, "Ultrasound Diagnostics" for medical imaging bachelor's degree programs, "Ultrasound Diagnostics" for medical imaging top-up programs, and the "Ultrasound Diagnosis" component of "Diagnostics" for other specialties at Guangzhou Medical University. In 2008, the discipline began enrolling master's degree students in ultrasound, training a total of 11 graduate students by 2013. Since 2003, bilingual teaching of the ultrasound diagnostics component has been implemented and undertaken. In 2013, the department assumed the teaching responsibility for the ultrasound diagnostics component of the Nanshan Class (taught entirely in English). 【Research Work】 The research directions of this discipline include: 1. Expansion of contrast-enhanced ultrasound applications, such as participating in the development of infrared imaging systems for detecting lower extremity venous thrombosis at the Respiratory Research Institute, and conducting clinical research on high-frequency color Doppler ultrasound for cervical tracheal stenosis and contrast-enhanced ultrasound for chest tumors; 2. Echocardiography in the pre- and post-operative evaluation and intraoperative guidance for complex congenital heart disease; 3. Application of interventional ultrasound in the urinary system. From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Tang Qing led and completed a project funded by the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation: "Study on Ultrasound Microbubble Contrast Agent Carriers Mediating Suicide Gene-Targeted Therapy for Liver Cancer." From 2003 to 2013, the department published over 40 papers, including 6 on teaching.
