Department Details

The Ultrasound Department of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital was established in the 1980s. Through the efforts of several generations, it has developed into a comprehensive department integrating ultrasound diagnosis and treatment, electrocardiogram (ECG) diagnostics, medical education, and scientific research. It has become a key development discipline of the hospital and serves as a training unit for master's and doctoral students at Tongji University. **I. Departmental Scale** Currently, the department has a total of 28 staff members, including medical technicians, nursing staff, and administrative clerks. Among them, there are 13 physicians: 1 Chief Physician, 3 Deputy Chief Physicians, and 8 Attending Physicians. The educational background includes 1 with a doctoral degree, 5 with master's degrees, 1 currently pursuing a doctorate, and 2 currently pursuing a master's degree. Three members hold teaching titles, including 1 Associate Professor and Doctoral Supervisor, and 2 Lecturers. Department members hold positions in numerous academic organizations, including 20 at the national level and 24 at the provincial/municipal level (see Table 1). Seven positions are at the level of Deputy Chairperson or above, as follows: * Deputy Chairperson, Ultrasound Specialty Committee, Tuberculosis Branch, Chinese Medical Association * Member, Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Branch, China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care; Deputy Head, Ultrasound Group * Deputy Chairperson, Critical Care Ultrasound Specialty Committee, Ultrasound Branch, Asia-Pacific Primary Care Health Association * Member, Ultrasound Medicine Specialty Branch, Shanghai Medical Association; Deputy Head, Interventional Ultrasound Group * Council Member, Shanghai Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Engineering; Deputy Chairperson, Interventional Ultrasound Specialty Committee * Standing Committee Member, Ultrasound Medicine Specialty Committee, Shanghai Association of Chinese Integrative Medicine; Deputy Head, Cardiopulmonary Ultrasound Group * Deputy Chairperson, Thoracic Interventional Group, Ultrasound Interventional Specialty Committee, Interventional Physicians Branch, Chinese Medical Doctor Association **Table 1: Academic Appointments** The Ultrasound Department currently has 10 ultrasound examination rooms and 1 ECG examination room. The main working area is located on the 2nd floor of Building 2. Additionally, 2 ultrasound examination rooms are located in the basement of Building 3, facilitating a "one-stop" service for tuberculosis patients. The department offers ultrasound examinations for the abdomen, heart, blood vessels, superficial organs, and gynecology, as well as interventional ultrasound diagnosis and treatment procedures. It has also progressively established specialized outpatient clinics, including expert clinics, general clinics, interventional ultrasound specialty clinics, lower extremity thrombus screening clinics, tumor imaging integration clinics, and lung tumor imaging-pathology MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) clinics, greatly facilitating patient access to care. **II. Professional Features** Based on routine ultrasound and ECG work, and leveraging the hospital's specialized focus on pulmonary diseases, the department has developed a series of new techniques and projects, including: 1. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy of the lung, lymph nodes, liver, and superficial masses; drainage of refractory pleural and peritoneal effusions; and the application of new ultrasound technologies such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), elastography, image fusion volume navigation, and speckle tracking in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases. These have comprehensively enhanced the department's clinical capabilities. 2. Application of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in respiratory critical care, utilizing lung ultrasound, echocardiography, and vascular ultrasound techniques for comprehensive assessment of cardiac, pulmonary, and circulatory function in critically ill patients. 3. Collaboration with the hospital's lung transplant clinical team to perform transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and perioperative ultrasound assessment for lung transplantation and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), providing real-time visual monitoring for several critical clinical management steps. With continuous optimization of examination and diagnostic workflows, work efficiency has steadily improved, and clinical volume has increased consistently. **III. Continuing Education** The department has successfully organized 4 continuing education courses, which received excellent feedback and enhanced the discipline's influence: * 2018: Shanghai Municipal Continuing Education Project "Advanced Course on New Progress in Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Diseases" * 2019: National Continuing Education Project "2nd Advanced Course on New Progress in Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Diseases and Forum on New Ultrasound Technologies" * 2021: National Continuing Education Project "3rd Advanced Course on New Progress in Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Diseases and Forum on New Ultrasound Technologies" * 2022: National Continuing Education Course "4th Advanced Course on New Progress in Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Diseases and Forum on New Ultrasound Technologies" The department has also hosted over 30 distinctive academic salons, such as the "Ultrasound and Scientific Research" series of online seminars, "Interventional Ultrasound Salons", "Clinical Research Young Investigator Salons", and "Pulmonary Topic" online courses. The excellent content and distinctive features have garnered widespread attention in the field. As a training unit for master's and doctoral students at Tongji University, with Director Wang Yin serving as a master's and doctoral supervisor, the department currently has 1 master's student and 2 doctoral students enrolled, and has participated in training 3 master's students.
