The Comprehensive Oncology Care (COC) Ward of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital is one of the first pilot units of the "Municipal Hospital Comprehensive Oncology Care (COC) Project" initiated by the Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, and it is also the sole pilot unit for lung cancer in Shanghai. Restructured and upgraded in June 2025, the ward is dedicated to establishing a patient-centered, full-cycle comprehensive lung cancer diagnosis and treatment model covering "prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up." It represents a significant milestone in the hospital's specialized lung cancer management and serves as a demonstration for the transformation and upgrading of comprehensive oncology care models. The ward has 61 operational beds and offers expert, special-needs, comprehensive oncology care, immunotherapy subspecialty, and international outpatient services. Its scope of diagnosis and treatment includes early lung cancer screening and diagnosis, precision treatment for advanced lung cancer, perioperative anti-tumor therapy for lung cancer patients, comprehensive treatment of mediastinal and pleural malignancies, and the development of novel anti-tumor therapeutic approaches. In addition to routine care, the ward focuses on clinical research and practice for drug-resistant tumors. It has established a molecular testing platform incorporating multiple technologies, forming a "comprehensive, rapid, and precise" lung cancer diagnosis and treatment system. Routine procedures include transbronchial biopsy via airway, CT-guided needle biopsy, and medical thoracoscopy. The ward currently has 28 medical staff, including 3 chief physicians, 2 professors and doctoral supervisors, all of whom hold graduate degrees or higher, forming a professional team dedicated to medical excellence, integrity, pragmatism, and innovation, working synergistically across clinical, research, and educational dimensions.
The greatest innovation of the COC ward lies in breaking down traditional disciplinary barriers by integrating multidisciplinary resources from medical oncology, thoracic surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology, creating a truly "one-stop" intelligent diagnosis and treatment platform for lung cancer patients. The ward is equipped with a dedicated COC platform and a structured electronic medical record system to enable information interoperability, and it incorporates an AI-assisted MDT mechanism to manage patients based on the complexity of their conditions, ensuring that each patient receives precise and individualized treatment plans for maximum benefit.
In the future, the COC model will enter the "2.0 era," focusing not only on efficacy and survival but also on adverse event management, quality of life assessment, and the construction of a more comprehensive real-world database. This systematic, data-driven, and fully integrated diagnosis and treatment model is gradually becoming a benchmark for the innovation of global oncology management concepts.
