Our hospital's SICU was established and put into use in 1992. It was one of the five ICU training bases in China directly supported by the Ministry of Health at that time and also one of the earliest ICUs in the country dedicated to the management of critically ill general surgery patients. The SICU has 12 open beds. It currently has 11 physicians, including 1 professor and chief physician; 3 associate professors and deputy chief physicians; 4 lecturers and attending physicians; and 3 resident physicians. Among them, 6 physicians have obtained or are currently pursuing medical doctoral or master's degrees. Some physicians have studied abroad in the United States, Hong Kong, and other regions. The SICU currently serves as the vice-chairman unit of the Critical Care Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the chairman unit of the Guangdong Provincial Critical Care Medicine Branch. The SICU adheres to a patient-centered approach, striving to build a harmonious doctor-patient relationship, and successfully completes all medical indicators each year. It primarily admits critically ill patients from surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, stomatology, and otorhinolaryngology. The admitted disease types include sepsis, septic shock, hypovolemic shock, cardiogenic shock, obstructive shock, severe pneumonia, thymoma with myasthenia gravis crisis, acute peritonitis, thoracic/abdominal aortic aneurysm, liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, organ cluster transplantation, and perioperative patients with organ dysfunction. All physicians in the SICU are proficient in common and advanced critical care skills, including endotracheal intubation, deep vein puncture, arterial puncture, fiberoptic bronchoscopy examination and treatment, Swan-Ganz catheter placement, PiCCO technology, Vigileo monitoring technology, and blood purification technology. All transferred patients receive rigorous, dynamic, and accurate monitoring along with timely and effective treatment, ensuring the smooth progress of various complex, difficult, and critical surgeries across specialties. Meanwhile, in clinical development, we actively promote and maintain our advantageous capabilities in hemodynamic and oxygen metabolism monitoring, continuous bedside blood purification, early goal-directed therapy for sepsis, and the application of new technologies and projects: ① Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) technology; ② High-Volume Hemofiltration (HVHF) technology; ③ Continuous cardiac output and SvO₂ monitoring as routine clinical monitoring; ④ Targeted monitoring of catheter-related infections. In particular, our advancements in hemodynamic management, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), oxygen metabolism management, respiratory management and mechanical ventilation, severe pancreatitis, and liver transplantation management are at the forefront in China. Over the past three years, the SICU has admitted an average of 800-900 critically ill surgical patients annually, with the proportion of critically ill patients reaching 75-80% and a rescue success rate for critically ill surgical patients of 85-93%, providing full support for the performance of complex and critical surgeries. The SICU has become one of the windows showcasing our hospital's comprehensive strength.
