The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1958. In 2011, it was among the first batch to receive the National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Project designation from the Ministry of Health. The department has ranked first in Beijing for consecutive years in the comprehensive evaluation of national key specialties in otorhinolaryngology. It also serves as the Beijing Endoscopy Training Center, the Beijing Children's Hearing Diagnosis and Deafness Gene Counseling Center, the supporting institution for the Chinese Medical Doctor Association's standardized residency training in otorhinolaryngology, a national demonstration base for standardized residency training, a national training base for core resident physician faculty, and a doctoral program and postdoctoral research station of Peking University. The department's annual outpatient and emergency visits and surgical volumes rank among the top in Beijing. The annual outpatient volume is approximately 140,000 visits, the annual emergency volume is approximately 15,000 visits, and the annual surgical volume exceeds 4,000 cases. The discipline comprises three subspecialties—otology, rhinology, and pharyngolaryngology-head and neck surgery—all of which have reached leading levels both domestically and internationally. It also houses a Sleep Medicine Center, Endoscopy Center, Voice Center, Anatomy Laboratory, and Allergy Center. The otology division is characterized by otomicrosurgery and otoendoscopic surgery, auditory implantation, and facial nerve surgery, performing a large number of complex external and middle ear surgeries, cochlear implantation and re-implantation procedures, endoscopic minimally invasive middle ear surgery, ossicular chain reconstruction and auditory implant device placement, facial nerve decompression, semicircular canal occlusion, and endolymphatic sac decompression. The rhinology division specializes in refractory sinusitis, nasal tumors, skull base surgery, rhinoorbital and rhinoneurological procedures, and nasal trauma and reconstructive surgery, with endoscopic orbital surgery based on the multidisciplinary team (MDT) platform for orbital diseases achieving leading levels both domestically and internationally. The pharyngolaryngology-head and neck surgery division is distinguished by its expertise in snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant tumors of the pharynx, larynx, head and neck, and salivary glands, multidisciplinary team (MDT) management of malignant tumors of the pharynx, larynx, head and neck, pediatric adenoid and tonsil surgery, and voice disorders. Among these, transoral curved laryngoscope minimally invasive surgery has reached internationally leading levels, while surgical and non-surgical treatments for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, pediatric partial adenoid and tonsil ablation, laryngeal function-preserving surgery for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, and voice assessment and treatment have all achieved advanced domestic standards. With the hospital's development and expansion, the department also operates comprehensively across multiple campuses, including the Northern Campus, Airport Campus, Central Party School Campus, Haidian North Campus, Yanqing Campus, Qinhuangdao Campus, Yan'an Campus, and Chongli Campus. The department boasts an excellent teaching tradition and undertakes substantial educational responsibilities for undergraduates, graduate students, community physicians, visiting physicians, and residents in standardized training. The discipline has 2 doctoral supervisors, 5 master's supervisors, 10 chief physicians/professors, and 12 associate chief physicians/associate professors. Several departmental experts have played major roles in chairing substantial work of the Otorhinolaryngology Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association's Postgraduate Medical Education division. Additionally, multiple faculty members have achieved outstanding results in Beijing's young teacher teaching competitions and have received funding from hospital-level and university-level teaching projects. Due to its solid teaching practices and outstanding educational achievements, the department has repeatedly been awarded the title of Outstanding Teaching Collective. The department brings together talented professionals and, through the unremitting efforts of several generations, has established multiple platforms for clinical and basic research, yielding fruitful results with over 200 academic papers published in high-impact domestic and international journals. Over the past five years, clinical and basic research projects have received nearly 10 million RMB in funding, and research achievements have been recognized with awards such as the Beijing Science and Technology Award and the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award. The department has obtained numerous invention patents and utility model patents, several of which have been successfully translated into practical applications, with related achievements winning the first prize in the physician category of the China Medical Device Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
