The Department of Laryngology is one of the largest centers for the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal diseases in China, and is at the leading domestic level in the treatment of laryngeal diseases. The Director of the Department of Laryngology is Wu Haitao. The department currently has 1 specially appointed Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor and 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipient, 9 professors/chief physicians, 4 doctoral supervisors, 4 master's supervisors, and 1 associate chief physician.
The Department of Laryngology has three subspecialties: Laryngeal Voice, Snoring, and Laryngeal Tumors. It has 50 beds and is equipped with internationally first-class voice assessment equipment, including rigid laryngoscopes, fiberoptic laryngoscopes, stroboscopic laryngoscopes, narrow band imaging, and high-speed photography, as well as a large number of advanced surgical devices such as CO2 lasers, fiberoptic CO2 lasers, KTP lasers, and holmium lasers. The traditional features of laryngeal disease treatment include the removal of complex laryngeal, esophageal, and airway foreign bodies, and the treatment of laryngotracheal stenosis, among which the treatment of complex airway foreign bodies is at the advanced domestic level. The Laryngeal Voice subspecialty extensively carries out behavioral therapy and surgical treatment for voice disorders. Behavioral therapy for voice disorders includes functional aphonia, mutational falsetto, muscle tension dysphonia, and vocal fatigue. Surgical treatment for voice disorders includes microsurgical laryngoscopic treatment of benign and malignant vocal cord lesions (vocal cord polyps, leukoplakia, papilloma, cysts, vocal cord sulcus, and early laryngeal cancer, etc.); prevention and treatment of vocal cord adhesion; and surgical treatments such as vocal cord injection for vocal cord paralysis, glottic enlargement, and thyroplasty. The Snoring subspecialty uses polysomnography, endoscopy, CT, and other methods for comprehensive assessment of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS, commonly known as snoring), and provides sequential treatment for OSAHS, including healthy lifestyle guidance, oral appliance therapy, nasal positive pressure ventilation (ventilator) therapy, and related surgical treatment for different obstruction levels. The treatment of laryngeal tumors is also at the leading domestic level, including surgical treatment of recurrent papillomatosis, laser treatment of early laryngeal cancer, laryngeal function-preserving surgery for laryngeal cancer and hypopharyngeal cancer with postoperative defect repair, and primary and secondary surgical voice reconstruction after total laryngectomy, all of which have considerable domestic influence.
