The Department of Pharmacy at Renji Hospital is a comprehensive pharmaceutical department that integrates drug supply, pharmaceutical administration, clinical pharmacy services, teaching, and research. It comprises the Outpatient and Emergency Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy, Cadre Healthcare Pharmacy, Drug Warehouse, Intravenous Drug Compounding Center, Clinical Pharmacy Center, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Marine Drug Integration Innovation Center, among other divisions, forming a development framework led by Renji East Hospital and supported by the West, South, and North Hospitals. Currently, the department has 186 pharmaceutical professionals, including 4 chief pharmacists/researchers and 11 associate chief pharmacists/associate researchers; 3 doctoral supervisors and 2 master's supervisors; 13 staff members hold doctoral degrees and 26 hold master's degrees, with over 80% of personnel having a bachelor's degree or above, forming a talent echelon that combines senior, middle-aged, and young professionals with a rational mix of senior, intermediate, and junior titles. On the basis of ensuring drug supply and quality, the Department of Pharmacy adheres to the core principle of "rational drug use" and takes "enhancing clinical capabilities and innovating research systems" as its focus, striving to build an innovative therapeutic drug management system "centered on evidence-based pharmacy and supported by distinctive clinical practice," achieving leapfrog development in disciplinary construction. It has been awarded the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by the Ministry of Education (2022), the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by the Ministry of Natural Resources (2023), the First Prize for Marine Science and Technology twice (2018, 2022), the Gold Award of the China Hospital Management Awards (2022), and the Two-Star National Youth Civilization Award (2023). It has also helped its Party branch be selected as a National Benchmark Party Branch of Clinical Departments in Public Hospitals (2023) and a Model Party Branch for Party Building in Shanghai Public Hospitals (2022). The Department of Pharmacy advances hospital drug informatization and dispensing automation management through smart pharmacy technologies, continuously optimizing drug management and use processes to enhance pharmacists' service quality and efficiency. It has established a comprehensive network management system, undertaking tasks such as drug selection, procurement, acceptance, storage, maintenance, distribution, information maintenance, data uploading, and pharmaceutical administration, achieving full-process electronic tracking of drugs. It is equipped with automated dispensing machines, unit-dose packaging systems, pneumatic tube delivery systems, intelligent management systems for narcotic, psychotropic, and toxic drugs, cold-chain monitoring systems, temperature and humidity monitoring systems, and unmanned drug pickup machines to strengthen intelligent management and ensure dispensing accuracy. It continuously optimizes the pre-prescription review system, using information technology for pre-prescription review and real-time interception, and has set up an independent medication consultation room to provide medication guidance and ensure patient medication safety. It strengthens ward pharmaceutical services, strictly manages narcotic and psychotropic drugs, emergency carts, and standby medications, and enhances the construction of operating room pharmacies. Equipped with horizontal laminar flow hoods, biological safety cabinets, and intravenous drug compounding robots, it conducts centralized compounding of hazardous drugs, parenteral nutrition, and other intravenous medications, ensuring drug safety while protecting healthcare workers. The Department of Pharmacy has successfully passed the re-certification of "RTAC International Certification (Pharmacy Section)." In 2023, it handled approximately 4.8 million outpatient and emergency prescription dispensings and provided drug supply, dispensing, and preparation for 220,000 inpatients. The Department of Pharmacy holds fast to the frontline of rational clinical drug use, establishing an innovative therapeutic drug management system for major chronic diseases with clinical pharmacy as the core, building a rational drug use decision-making system based on an evidence-based drug evaluation framework, and constructing a precision medication system with the strategy of "precision testing - refined subtyping - targeted intervention." It has formed a development momentum with eight sub-specialties advancing in parallel: anti-infection, anticoagulation, anti-tumor, endocrinology, immunology, gynecology, surgery, and clinical pharmacology. It actively participates in MDT multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment, conducting drug monitoring for critically ill and complex patients, while expanding pharmaceutical service scope through pharmacy clinics, community services, and internet-based pharmaceutical services. It has pioneered a "research-oriented clinical pharmacist training model" (which won the Silver Award in the Discipline Management Group of the 2021 China Hospital Management Awards), inspiring outstanding talents to stand out: Jiao Weihua received the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (2020), Yang Fan was honored as a Young Scientist by the Ministry of Science and Technology (2022), and 13 clinical pharmacists have received municipal-level talent projects such as Shanghai Youth Top-notch Talent, Shanghai Science and Technology Rising Star, Pujiang Talent, and Yangfan Program. Director Lin Houwen was awarded the 17th Shanghai Science and Technology Elite (2022) and the National Top Ten Medical Promotion Experts (2023), among others. The Department of Pharmacy led the establishment of China's first municipal-level "Shanghai Anticoagulation Pharmacist Alliance" and the first cross-regional "Yangtze River Delta Anticoagulation Pharmacist Alliance," effectively promoting regional homogeneous therapeutic drug management models. The Department of Pharmacy is among the first batch of National Clinical Pharmacist Training Bases, the Health Commission's Scarce Talent (Clinical Pharmacist) Training Base, the Chinese Medical Association's Clinical Pharmacist Training Base, and the Shanghai Clinical Pharmacist Training Base. It has trained over 200 outstanding clinical pharmacists from various provinces and cities nationwide. Additionally, as a graduation internship base for Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, and other institutions, and as the unit where the Dean of the School of Clinical Pharmacy of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is based, it has long been committed to building a high-quality clinical pharmacy teaching platform and promoting the sharing of clinical pharmacy teaching resources in the Yangtze River Delta. Furthermore, targeting major diseases such as tumors, infections, and inflammation, the Department of Pharmacy focuses on the structure and function of marine symbiotic organism-derived drug molecules. It has established drug innovation research platforms including the discovery and structural modification of marine drug-derived molecules, total synthesis and biosynthesis, microbial screening and fermentation, and pharmacological activity screening and target-mechanism studies, comprehensively enhancing the discovery efficiency of new drug-derived molecules and broadening their source pathways, promoting the research, development, and translation of marine innovative drugs. The Department of Pharmacy has achieved remarkable scientific and technological results in clinical therapeutic drug management and innovative drug research. Over the past decade, it has obtained 50 national-level research projects (including 44 from the National Natural Science Foundation), led 3 National Key R&D Program projects and 1 National Science and Technology Major Project, with total funding exceeding 80 million yuan. It has published 226 SCI papers in international journals, been granted 25 national invention patents (including 2 international PCT patents and 1 US patent), and developed 3 candidate new drugs with independent intellectual property rights. The project "Preparation Methods and Uses of Butenolide Compounds" achieved scientific research transfer of 10 million yuan.
