Renji Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was founded in 1844 and is a comprehensive tertiary Grade A hospital integrating medical care, teaching, and research. In 1992, the Shanghai Human Sperm Bank was established, and in 2001, the Reproductive Medicine Center was founded. Currently, it offers diagnostic and therapeutic services covering all aspects of infertility, eugenics, and fertility preservation and reconstruction. Its annual outpatient volume exceeds 400,000 visits, with nearly 10,000 IVF cycles, and its clinical pregnancy rate consistently ranks first in Shanghai and among the leading levels in China. For four consecutive years, it has been listed in the top ten nationally in the specialty category of the Fudan Edition China Hospital Rankings (the only reproductive center in Shanghai to be included). In 2022, it ranked second nationwide in the National Hospital Internet Influence Index. The center has now established a comprehensive disciplinary platform. In 2009, it led the establishment of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Infertility Specialized Diagnosis and Treatment Center. In 2010, the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission approved the establishment of the Shanghai Reproductive and Eugenics Technology Center. In 2012, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission approved the establishment of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Assisted Reproduction and Eugenics. In 2013, the Shanghai Branch of the National Engineering Research Center for Assisted Reproduction and Eugenics was established. In 2014, the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission approved the establishment of the Shanghai Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Training Base, which undertakes training for newly appointed staff in reproductive centers across Shanghai. In 2018, the Shanghai Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Quality Control Center was affiliated with the Renji Reproductive Medicine Center. In January 2019, it became the first center in China to pass the DNV GL&RTAC assisted reproductive special international certification, providing safer and higher-quality reproductive medical services to domestic and international patients. In 2021, it successfully obtained approval for disciplinary platforms such as the "Shanghai Fertility Preservation and Reconstruction Center" and launched the country's first MyBaby blockchain embryo visualization application. In 2023, it was recognized as a Shanghai Top Priority Research Center and a Shanghai Public Health Key Discipline, marking a new step in disciplinary development. Over the past five years, it has undertaken more than 70 projects, including key research and development programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (as chief scientist), key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and key international cooperation projects. It has published more than 300 SCI papers in top international journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), The Lancet, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). As the first completing institution, it has won honors including the First Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and the First Prize of the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award.
