The Department of Neurology at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was founded in 1952 by Professor Zhou Xiaoda, a renowned neurologist in China. It is one of the earliest large general hospitals to establish a neurology department in Shanghai and across the country, and is recognized as one of the birthplaces of neurology in Shanghai and China. Since the 1950s, it has been among the first in China to conduct EEG examinations and provide treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, nervous system infections, cerebrovascular diseases, and craniocerebral trauma. The Department of Neurology at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, comprises three campuses—East Campus, West Campus, and South Campus—as well as multiple medical alliance campuses including Baoshan Branch, Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Branch, Jiading Branch, Pudong Punan Branch, and Nantong Branch, with over 300 open beds. It is equipped with a stroke unit, DSA operating room, cervical-cerebral vascular ultrasound, neuroelectrophysiology room, neuropsychology room, neuroscience laboratory, as well as an independent neurology emergency department and a green channel for stroke treatment. It annually treats a large number of critically ill patients with stroke, encephalitis, myelitis, status epilepticus, and other emergency and severe conditions, with annual outpatient and emergency visits exceeding 250,000, ranking among the top at the same level of hospitals in Shanghai. The Department of Neurology is a founding member of the Functional Neurological Disorders Diagnosis and Treatment Alliance, one of the first batch of Shanghai Stroke Treatment Centers and a Stroke Center of the Chinese Stroke Alliance, a Shanghai Stroke Clinical Treatment Center, one of the first batch of National Comprehensive Epilepsy Centers, a National Neuroimmunology and Infectious Diseases Research Sub-center, a National Peripheral Neuropathy Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Center, a National Clinical Pharmacology Base, and a National Residency Standardized Training Base for Neurology. The discipline is subdivided into multiple sub-specialty areas, covering movement disorders, cognitive disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, neuroimmunology, neurogenetics, functional neurological disorders and rare intractable diseases, epilepsy, sleep disorders, neuroelectrophysiology, neuromuscular diseases and pathology, etc. Leveraging the unique advantages of the discipline, it is committed to building an interdisciplinary integration development model. Through close collaboration, it has specially established a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) clinic for functional neurological disorders, an MDT clinic for Parkinson's disease and a wide range of movement disorders, and an MDT specialized clinic for cognitive disorders. It has also added specialized clinics such as a joint clinic for neuropathic pain, a special clinic for obesity-related cognitive impairment, and a specialized clinic for hepatolenticular degeneration, aiming to provide patients with comprehensive and precise medical care. The Department of Neurology at Renji Hospital will continue to promote comprehensive discipline development, with a focus on establishing a clinical diagnosis and treatment center for common and intractable neurological diseases. Taking the development of sub-specialties and key specialized diseases as the starting point, and leveraging the talent advantage of outstanding young and middle-aged research-oriented physicians with specialized expertise and noble medical ethics, it will strengthen the construction of the clinical diagnosis and treatment center, scientific research platform, and talent team, striving to ultimately build a domestically leading and internationally advanced clinical neuroscience diagnosis, treatment, and research center with comprehensive specialties, distinctive features, a complete talent echelon, and balanced development in medical care, education, and research.
