The Emergency Department of Renji Hospital is a trauma emergency medical center for Shanghai and Pudong New Area, with patient visits consistently ranking among the highest in Shanghai, reaching over 500,000 emergency visits in 2023. It is one of the first emergency residency and fellowship training bases in Shanghai and a doctoral degree granting unit of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Currently, it serves as the quality control组长 unit for emergency and ICU in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, and the Shanghai Acute Poisoning Treatment Technology Training Center. The discipline has long maintained a leading position among hospitals of the same level in Shanghai in the treatment volume of sepsis, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, multiple organ failure, heart failure, acute poisoning, malignant arrhythmias, various types of shock, especially various high-risk chest pain and various types of abdominal pain, and has accumulated rich clinical experience. The success rate of treatment for patients with acute massive gastrointestinal bleeding exceeds 95%, reaching an internationally first-class level. The discipline has specially established specialized emergency treatment departments including the Digestive Critical Care Emergency Visit Center, Cardiovascular Critical Care Emergency Visit Center, and Abdominal Pain Emergency Visit Center. The Emergency Department has nearly 70 physicians, including more than 20 experienced experts with senior professional titles, 1 doctoral supervisor, 3 master's supervisors, and 3 nursing staff with senior professional titles. It has undertaken nearly ten national-level research projects, and some research findings have been published in international top-tier journals such as Eur Heart J, Shock, Resuscitation, Crit Care Med, Int. J. Biol. Macromol., Advanced Science, and Angew Chem Int Edit. It has participated in drafting nearly 30 international/Chinese guidelines or expert consensus statements, among which the world-class guideline it participated in writing was published in Eur Heart J (impact factor 35.8). The discipline has first-class technical equipment and significant influence in the domestic critical care field, leading domestically in many aspects. It is the chairman unit of the Critical Care Professional Committee of the Chinese Physiological Society, the vice-chairman unit of the Cardiac Critical Care Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the deputy head unit of the National Cardiovascular Critical Care Group of the 10th Committee of the Cardiovascular Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. It is also the head unit of the National Geriatric Cardiovascular Critical Care Group of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the lead unit of the Yangtze River Delta Cardiovascular Critical Care Alliance, the chairman unit of the Emergency Branch of the Shanghai Association of Integrative Medicine, and the vice-chairman unit of the Emergency Physician Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association, promoting domestic and international exchange and cooperation in related research fields. It has received 6 provincial and ministerial-level awards including Shanghai Science and Technology Awards. The Emergency Department of Renji Hospital has established full-process channels for emergency, resuscitation, and hospitalization in both the Pudong Campus and Minhang South Campus, with a total of over 200 resuscitation and observation beds, in addition to 130 emergency ward inpatient beds and 30 emergency ICU beds. It possesses comprehensive medical emergency equipment, focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of acute critical illnesses and complex diseases, and has rich clinical diagnosis and treatment experience. As a resuscitation center for acute critical illnesses, a consultation center for complex diseases, a retention center for multi-system diseases, and a rescue center for public health emergencies, it undertakes the treatment of various acute critical patients as well as support work for major public health emergencies and major political tasks, further expanding the radiation effect of the medical brand. Its medical scope covers the Yangtze River Delta and even the whole country, and it has gained extremely high recognition in society and the industry. The discipline has successively received numerous honorary titles including the National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Branch, the Shanghai March 8th Red Flag Collective, the Shanghai Health System March 8th Red Flag Collective, the Shanghai Youth Civilization Award, and the lead unit of the Shanghai Health Industry Youth Civilization Award Creation Group.
