The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Renji Hospital was founded in 1954. It is a doctoral degree granting program, an outstanding unit in the national PCCM standardized construction for tertiary hospitals, one of the first respiratory specialty physician training units in Shanghai, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Airway Diseases, among others. The Department of Respiratory Medicine has established divisions at Renji Hospital South Campus, East Campus, and West Campus. It currently has a Bronchoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, an Interstitial Lung Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and a Pulmonary Physiology Diagnostic Center, among others. Its clinical work covers all areas of respiratory diseases. Currently, the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the South Campus has 45 inpatient beds and 23 physicians, including 10 with senior professional titles and 10 with intermediate professional titles. Its clinical work scope extends across Renji South, East, and West Campuses and various medical alliance units. There are approximately 150,000 outpatient visits per year and about 1,200 respiratory endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures per year. Its medical diagnosis and treatment capabilities, discipline talent training, and academic level are generally at the advanced domestic level. Over the past five years, department members have annually led multiple national or Shanghai municipal research projects and have held positions in the Chinese Thoracic Society, the Interstitial Lung Disease Group of the European Respiratory Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and various subspecialty groups of the Shanghai Medical Association Respiratory Branch. As a core department of internal medicine, the Department of Respiratory Medicine has outstanding work in interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and interventional endoscopic diagnosis and treatment, and has participated in multiple international multicenter clinical studies of new anti-fibrotic drugs. The Bronchoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center is fully equipped and can perform various grade III and IV bronchoscopic procedures such as EBUS-TBNA, TBLC, small probe, high-frequency electrocautery cauterization, balloon dilation, and stent placement. In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Respiratory Medicine, as a "main force" department, undertook a large amount of outpatient screening, diagnosis, and treatment work and dispatched multiple medical and nursing staff to support pandemic control in other provinces, demonstrating the dauntless spirit of Renji respiratory professionals. In last year's COVID-19 pandemic, the respiratory medical and nursing team charged to the forefront of patient treatment and undertook the treatment of COVID-19 patients in three wards, greatly alleviating the hospital's emergency pressure. The respiratory specialty has about 10-15 resident trainees per month and also undertakes teaching for the medical school's undergraduate, eight-year program, and University of Ottawa Medical School in theoretical courses, PBL, and CBL courses, as well as textbook compilation. Multiple physicians have received honors such as hospital-level outstanding teachers, outstanding residency training secretaries, teachers, and directors, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Teaching and Educating Award, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University President's Award. The Department of Respiratory Medicine has long been committed to the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical respiratory diseases and has conducted systematic academic research and published important academic achievements in interstitial pneumonia, lung cancer, severe pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
