The Department of Radiation Oncology at Renji Hospital was established in 2005 and treats patients with various common malignant tumors requiring radiotherapy and comprehensive treatment. It has subspecialties including head and neck, thoracic, and abdominopelvic oncology, and is equipped with standard normalized wards with 48 beds, expandable to 85 beds, making it one of the hospitals with more beds among Grade 3A general hospitals in Shanghai. The department has strong technical expertise and routinely performs three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, IMRT intensity-modulated radiotherapy, VMAT volumetric rotational therapy, TOMO, three-dimensional brachytherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, and ART adaptive radiotherapy. It is also the institution of the second president of the Radiotherapy Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association and has a well-structured team of physicians. The department maintains balanced development in clinical care, education, and research. While ensuring high-quality and efficient clinical treatment for patients, it conducts clinical trials and basic research, with two full-time research personnel. It is a master's degree program site in Radiation Oncology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, a standardized training base for radiation oncology residents in Shanghai, and a standardized training base for radiation oncology specialists in Shanghai. It is also one of the team members of the Joint Visiting Scholar Program in Radiation Oncology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, accepting visiting physicians and physicists from multiple domestic hospitals for training each year. In terms of clinical application, from its establishment to January 2024, the department has treated a total of 28,286 patients receiving initial radiotherapy, covering more than 34 types of diseases including pediatric tumors. The top eight malignant tumors in terms of initial treatment cases are breast cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, esophageal cancer, rectal cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, prostate cancer, and brain glioma. In 2023, the department discharged 3,620 patients, had 22,677 outpatient visits, and treated 2,925 patients with radiotherapy. The number of radiotherapy sessions ranks among the top 3 among comprehensive Grade 3A hospitals in Shanghai. In terms of platform equipment, the Department of Radiation Oncology is currently equipped with 5 medical linear accelerators capable of performing IMRT, IGRT, SBRT, and ART (adaptive radiotherapy) (1 United Imaging CT-guided ring gantry accelerator Halos, 1 Tomo Radixact, 1 Varian Edge, 1 Varian ring gantry accelerator Halcyon, 1 Elekta Synergy VMAT), 1 head stereotactic gamma knife, 1 three-dimensional brachytherapy afterloader, 1 dedicated large-bore 4DCT simulation positioning machine for radiotherapy, and 5 brands of dedicated radiotherapy treatment planning systems (Philips Pinnacle, Varian Eclipse, Tomotherapy, Elekta Oncentra, United Imaging uTPS, totaling more than 39 workstations). It is also equipped with IBA second-generation three-dimensional water tank, IBA Compass, IBA Matrixx, PTW Octavius multi-channel three-dimensional dose verification system, IBA reference-grade dosimeter, Vidar self-developing film scanner, and RIT complete film analysis software, as well as corresponding proton therapy physics quality control equipment. It is also equipped with a customized integrated oncology information platform for radiotherapy. In terms of talent梯队, the center currently has 18 physicians, including 6 with doctoral degrees and 6 doctoral candidates; 3 full professors, 5 associate professors, 8 attending physicians, and 3 residents; 18 nurses in the inpatient department and 2 in the outpatient clinic; 7 physicists; and 22 technologists. There are 2 full-time research personnel. Multiple clinical subspecialty directions have been established with dedicated personnel responsible, including thoracic tumors, head and neck tumors, breast tumors, gastrointestinal tumors, urological tumors, and neurological tumors. In terms of preliminary foundation, over the past 5 years, the center has achieved fruitful innovative results in clinical and basic research. Over the past five years, it has obtained various research projects, including 8 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects: NSFC Youth Project (Project Number: 81903129) "Mechanism Study on RASSF2 Regulating CD103+ Dendritic Cell Infiltration in Tumor Microenvironment Affecting Radiotherapy Efficacy"; NSFC Youth Project (Project Number: 81802626) "Role and Mechanism of CircRNA XPO4 as ceRNA in Regulating Cisplatin Resistance in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer"; NSFC Youth Project (Project Number: 82303278) "Mechanism Study on Platelet-Derived 5-HT Promoting Pancreatic Cancer Progression by Regulating Pancreatic Cancer Microenvironment through HTR7 and 5-HTylation Post-Translational Modification"; NSFC General Program (Project Number: 81972854) "Role and Mechanism of LINC00273/ZEB1 in Radiotherapy-Induced Ferroptosis of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells"; NSFC Youth Project (Project Number: 82102829) "Mechanism Study on CDK7 Inhibitor THZ1 Regulating Growth Inhibition and Radiosensitivity of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer through Transcription Factor MYC"; NSFC Youth Project (Project Number: 82403800) "Mechanism Study on Gut Microbiota-Host Co-Metabolite pCS Mediating Macrophage Fatty Acid Oxidation to Promote Neoadjuvant Radiotherapy Resistance in Rectal Cancer"; NSFC General Program (Project Number: 31970745) "Regulatory Effect of Vascular Basement Membrane on Neutrophil Extravasation and Its Molecular Mechanism"; NSFC General Program (Project Number: 82272747) "Single-Cell RNA Sequencing-Based Analysis of the Role and Mechanism of USP29/ZEB1 in Radiotherapy Resistance of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer"; with total funding of 2.975 million yuan. It has undertaken 5 municipal-level projects including the Shanghai Natural Science Foundation of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission "Mechanism Study on ABCA7 Gene Mutation Regulating Pancreatic Cancer Radiosensitivity through lncRNA TMEM191A" and the Shanghai Natural Science Foundation General Program of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission "Single-Cell Dimension Analysis of the Role and Mechanism of DGCR8 Inhibiting T Lymphocyte Gut Homing to Alleviate Radiation-Induced Intestinal Injury"; and participated in 1 National Key R&D Program project of the National 13th Five-Year Research Plan on head gamma knife evaluation and preliminary data analysis, totaling 26 research projects, 3 drug clinical trials, and more than 10 ITT studies, with 46 SCI papers published. It led the research and development and clinical study of China's first CT-guided ring gantry accelerator and successfully obtained NMPA certification. It led the research and development and clinical application of China's first domestic integrated oncology radiotherapy information platform, which passed the National Electronic Medical Record Level 6 review.
