The Department of Clinical Nutrition was formally established on August 8, 1985, as a medical technology department of the hospital, initially named the "Nutrition Department." The Nutrition Department comprised both nutrition technical staff and culinary personnel. In 1986, Ding Lan was officially appointed as Deputy Director of the Nutrition Department as a nutrition technical staff member, primarily overseeing professional operations; in 1987, Yu Minghua was appointed as Director of the Nutrition Department, primarily managing administrative affairs. In April 1999, nutrition technical staff and culinary personnel were formally separated, and the Nutrition Department was limited to nutrition technical staff only, serving as a medical technology department of the hospital. In April 2022, it was decided at the hospital directors' meeting that the Nutrition Department would be renamed the Department of Clinical Nutrition. The Department of Clinical Nutrition is responsible for outpatient nutrition services; providing nutritional guidance, consultation, and management for hospitalized patients requiring dietary therapy; formulating various diet plans; and conducting nutritional risk screening and assessment for patients, intra- and inter-hospital consultations, and in-hospital MDT diagnosis and treatment; promoting the rational application of nutritional therapy in comprehensive clinical treatment. Since 2000, the focus of nutrition technical staff has shifted from the kitchen to the wards, enabling individualized nutritional guidance for nearly every patient requiring special dietary therapy, resulting in significant improvements in the compliance rate of therapeutic diets, the variety of therapeutic diet types, and the number of nutritional consultations. Efforts in nutritional education have been intensified in both wards and outpatient clinics: regular lectures are delivered to patients in the Endocrinology Department, and irregular lectures are given to patients and healthcare staff in other wards as requested, with participation in the endocrinology obesity and diabetes outpatient services. In 2003, assistance was provided to the nutritional cafeteria in transforming the traditional meal selection system into a nutritionally balanced meal package system, developing and refining various nutritional meal recipes and improving statistical forms. From 2004 to 2005, active cooperation was given to the hospital in preparing the Grade III Level A hospital accreditation materials for the Nutrition Department, successfully passing the re-accreditation and receiving high praise from review experts. In 2006, graduate students assigned from the Department of Nutrition, School of Public Health, Peking University, were accepted, and in collaboration with the Endocrinology Department, participation was undertaken in the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission research project titled "Study on Intervention and Reversal of Prediabetes in Beijing," with regular follow-up outpatient clinics conducted. As a medical technology department of the hospital, the Department of Clinical Nutrition actively engages in external communications, strengthening ties with nutrition departments of major hospitals and actively participating in activities organized by nutrition societies: delivering lectures at national nutritionist training courses hosted by the Chinese Nutrition Society; contributing to the compilation of the question bank for the national nutritionist qualification examination; accepting nutrition personnel from sister hospitals for advanced studies; successfully completing the training tasks for nutritionists from Ningxia and Qinghai in western China organized by the Ministry of Health; serving as the first deputy editor-in-chief in the compilation of the textbook "Clinical Nutrition" for nursing programs in higher medical institutions, as well as the "Clinical Nutrition Practice Guide"; participating in the compilation of the professional textbook "Clinical Nutrition" organized by the National Higher Education Self-Examination Committee; contributing to the development of hospital therapeutic diet standards and operating procedures; actively participating in large-scale diabetes health consultation activities organized by the Peking University Diabetes Center; contributing to the partial compilation of the "Clinical Nutrition" section of the Health Professional Technical Qualification Examination Guide organized by the Ministry of Health; participating in the question-setting and review processes for the health professional technical qualification examination organized by the Ministry of Health; publishing multiple research articles as first or second author in core journals; and making multiple appearances in health education programs on television, radio, and in newspapers.
