Introduction to the Department of Sports Medicine The Institute of Sports Medicine of Peking University (Department of Sports Medicine, Peking University Third Hospital) was established in January 1959. It is the earliest and only comprehensive sports medicine institute in China that integrates precision medicine, education and teaching, scientific research, and team-based medical services. After 65 years of vigorous development, the institute now encompasses four professional directions: sports trauma, sports rehabilitation, sports nutrition, and medical supervision. It has four clinical subspecialties: Knee Joint Surgery, Hip Joint Surgery, Shoulder and Elbow Joint Surgery, and Foot and Ankle Joint Surgery, comprising 10 clinical diagnosis and treatment platforms and 5 teaching and research platforms, with strong technical capabilities. Currently, the institute has 60 senior professional title staff, 10 doctoral supervisors, and 15 master's supervisors. Among them, 1 is a young top-tier talent selected for the "Ten Thousand Talents Plan" of the Central Organization Department, and 4 have been awarded the Beijing Science and Technology Rising Star, forming a complete talent echelon. It is currently the largest and most influential comprehensive institute in China, fully conducting research on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries and sports-related diseases. The institute's ward beds have grown from 5 at the time of its founding to the current 166. The annual outpatient visits and surgical volumes have been increasing year by year. In 2024, the outpatient visits reached over 210,000, with an annual surgical volume of over 16,000 cases and an average hospital stay of 3.41 days, ranking first nationwide in diagnosis and treatment data. As the largest training base for endoscopic (osteoarticular) diagnosis and treatment techniques in China and an arthroscopic surgeon training academy certified by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the institute accepts more than 200 visiting physicians from home and abroad each year, cultivating a large number of academic leaders in the field of sports medicine for China. Trainees cover 34 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government, including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. The institute currently has multiple strong platform supports, including the Beijing Key Laboratory of Sports Medicine for Joint Diseases, the Sports Nutrition Laboratory, the Clinical Big Data Research Platform, the Arthroscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery Teaching and Training Platform, the Sports Function Testing and Evaluation Platform, and the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Sports Trauma Treatment Technology and Instruments. Targeting common injuries and difficult diseases in the field of sports medicine, it conducts basic and clinical applied research related to sports injuries, tissue engineering repair, and clinical translation research, all of which have reached domestically leading and internationally advanced levels. Over the years, it has published more than 1,200 high-level academic papers in top journals in the field, led over 500 national and provincial/ministerial research projects, with a total funding amount of 470 million RMB, authorized 234 patents, and achieved 31 cumulative technology transfers with a total transfer value of 97 million RMB. It has won 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 third prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and more than 20 provincial, ministerial, and commission-level science and technology achievement awards. Since its establishment, the institute has always adhered to giving back to society with superb technology and high-quality services, safeguarding the development of national competitive sports and the promotion of nationwide fitness programs. As the institute's founder, Professor Qu Mianyu, placed special emphasis on providing on-site services by going deep into sports teams, the institute's sports trauma experts have provided medical support for national teams and provincial/municipal teams year-round, serving athletes on-site continuously for decades without interruption. While serving sports teams, the institute has also established long-term cooperation mechanisms with the National Ballet of China, the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater, the Beijing Dance Academy, the National Peking Opera Company, the China Acrobatic Troupe, and the Beijing Patrol and Special Police Corps. Regularly providing on-site medical services to armed police soldiers, acrobats, Peking Opera performers, and dancers for special injuries caused by training, truly achieving "taking from society and giving back to society."
