The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Peking University Third Hospital was established in September 1949, founded by Professor Zhu Hongyin, one of the pioneers of plastic surgery in China, becoming the first specialized department of plastic surgery in the newly established People's Republic of China. With a commitment to innovation and pragmatic practice, the department has achieved numerous "firsts" in the history of plastic surgery development in China since its inception, serving as a trailblazer and builder of Chinese plastic surgery. The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is an internationally renowned and domestically leading specialized department integrating clinical practice, education, and scientific research. Currently, the department has nearly one hundred staff members, including 36 physicians, 18 senior-title professionals (8 full professors, 10 associate professors), 17 mid-level-title professionals, 3 postdoctoral fellows, and 6 doctoral and master's supervisors, forming a rigorous, truth-seeking, pragmatic, and dedicated medical team. The department has consistently adhered to the principle of tissue repair and organ reconstruction as its disciplinary cornerstone, while integrating the development of aesthetic surgery, with emphasis on minimally invasive, individualized, and precise treatment concepts. In recent years, the department has broken down disciplinary barriers and promoted multidisciplinary integration, establishing multiple new frontiers with plastic and reconstructive surgery as the link: collaborating with the Department of Interventional Radiology and the Nursing Department to establish the PUTH Wound Treatment Center; establishing China's first MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) medical team for gender dysphoria, followed by the establishment of a specialized gender dysphoria clinic two years later; creating a hemangioma MDT diagnosis and treatment system; and conducting emergency trauma plastic and aesthetic repair services, greatly meeting the public's increasingly high demands for medical services. On this basis, in 2022, a craniomaxillofacial trauma MDT team was established, pioneering the concept of craniomaxillofacial trauma plastic and aesthetic repair in China. In recent years, the department's scientific research has achieved significant progress, ranking 4th in both the five-year total science and technology evaluation metric (ASTEM) and the science and technology evaluation metric (STEM) for plastic surgery among Chinese hospitals in 2023. Over the past five years, more than 170 SCI papers have been published with the department as the primary affiliation, with over 70% published in high-level Q1/Q2 SCI journals. Multiple high-quality papers have been published in areas such as scar management, wound repair, cartilage tissue engineering, and gender-affirming sequence treatment. In the past five years, the department has secured 6 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation, achieved 4 technology transfers, and obtained 4 invention patents and 49 utility model patents. In 2024, two projects were selected for the "Top Ten Advances in the Field of Plastic Surgery in China for 2023." In the 2024 Research-Oriented Hospital Evaluation and Selection, the department was recognized as a research-oriented discipline. Since its founding, the department has undertaken the mission of cultivating plastic surgery professionals for the newly established China. As the cradle of plastic surgery talent development in China, it not only undertakes clinical teaching tasks for Peking University Health Science Center but also serves as the oldest training hospital for visiting physicians in plastic surgery in China. Currently, it is a standardized specialist training base for plastic surgery at Peking University Health Science Center, fulfills continuing medical education tasks annually, and offers elective courses for Peking University undergraduates. As a premier medical education institution in the field, it serves as a doctoral program site and postdoctoral mobile station for plastic surgery, having trained numerous graduate students and cross-century talents. To date, it has graduated 3 postdoctoral fellows, 45 doctoral students, 74 master's students, and 5 cross-century talents, and has trained over 700 visiting physicians and 69 students in standardized specialist training. Over the years, the department has continuously organized and hosted multiple professional continuing education courses and academic conferences, working hand in hand with colleagues to accelerate the advancement of the industry. Carrying forward the legacy and forging ahead, with social progress and the elevation of public demands, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery remains committed to serving public health as its mission, continuously pursuing the highest realm of disciplinary development!
