The Department of Occupational Diseases at Peking University Third Hospital is one of the earliest departments in China to conduct clinical research on occupational diseases, and is also one of the most distinctive clinical departments of our hospital. In 2010, it was selected as a key project of the Ministry of Health's clinical disciplines. In 2013, it took the lead in establishing the Occupational Diseases Branch of the Beijing Medical Association. In 2014, it became a clinical base for occupational diseases of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2015, it became the chair unit of the Beijing Occupational Health Examination Quality Control and Improvement Center. In 2021, it became a technical support institution for the Beijing Pneumoconiosis Rehabilitation Stations. After six decades of development, the department has gathered a number of renowned occupational disease experts both domestically and internationally, and enjoys a high reputation in the medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, preventive healthcare, rehabilitation, and health management of occupational diseases. Introduction to the Department of Occupational Diseases, Peking University Third Hospital The Occupational Disease Research Center was formerly the Occupational Disease Specialty Group of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Beijing Medical College. It was established in 1959, personally founded by the renowned professor of internal medicine, Wang Shijun. In 1972, it was formally reorganized into the Department of Occupational Diseases, with a research division established. In 1985, the department was expanded into the Occupational Disease Research Center, becoming one of the first ten research centers established by Beijing Medical University and the only doctoral training site for clinical occupational diseases in China. In 2003, following the promulgation of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on Prevention and Control of Occupational Diseases," Peking University Third Hospital was among the first batch to pass the qualification review of occupational health technical institutions conducted by the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, and was approved as one of the first medical institutions in Beijing with diagnostic, treatment, and occupational health surveillance capabilities covering nearly the entire spectrum of occupational diseases. In accordance with the "Beijing Administrative Measures for the Filing of Occupational Health Examination Institutions" and the "Beijing Implementation Measures for the Filing Administration of Occupational Disease Diagnostic Institutions," the hospital completed the filing procedures for occupational health examination institutions and occupational disease diagnostic institutions in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Introduction to the Department of Occupational Diseases, Peking University Third Hospital After 60 years of development, the Department of Occupational Diseases has always remained committed to its duties and served society, providing high-level, high-quality medical services for the prevention and treatment of occupational diseases at both the national and Beijing municipal levels. In addition to undertaking the diagnosis and treatment of occupational diseases for outpatient and inpatient cases at our hospital, it also bears important responsibilities such as emergency rescue and consultation for acute and severe occupational illnesses from Beijing and across the country, as well as the diagnosis and appraisal of difficult occupational diseases and the assessment of disability levels caused by occupational diseases. Peking University Third Hospital not only has a dedicated Department of Occupational Diseases, but since the hospital's inception, it has also equipped major clinical departments such as Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology, Stomatology, and Radiology with specialized personnel and instruments to provide professional services for special occupational injuries, making Peking University Third Hospital one of the few medical institutions nationwide capable of providing high-level diagnosis, treatment, and health surveillance services for occupational diseases spanning multiple disciplines. In 1996, with the approval of Beijing Medical University, the Department of Occupational Diseases established an Allergy Clinic based on its original immunology group, expanding its scope of services to include other immunological diseases, including autoimmune diseases. In 1999, it took the lead in establishing a "Chemical Poisoning Clinic" in China, and the pneumoconiosis specialty added an Environmental Lung Disease Clinic, incorporating lung injuries caused by environmental pollutants into its scope of diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, in clinical practice, we are adept at identifying problems and summarizing experience, gradually carrying out research on quality management in occupational disease prevention and treatment. During the national process of formulating and revising the "Law on Prevention and Control of Occupational Diseases" and other occupational health laws and regulations, we have provided scientific opinions and recommendations to health administrative departments for developing occupational disease prevention and treatment systems that conform to practical realities. Facing the new situation, in 2021, the Department of Occupational Diseases at Peking University Third Hospital undertook and completed the project commissioned by the Occupational Health Division of the National Health Commission, namely the compilation of the "Popular Science Guide for the Prevention and Treatment of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders," which was promoted to the whole society during the publicity week of the "Law on Prevention and Control of Occupational Diseases" in 2022. In 2022, it led the preliminary research project for the "Diagnostic Criteria for Occupational Musculoskeletal Disorders." Over the past sixty years, the department has achieved gratifying results in research on pneumoconiosis, poisoning, occupational asthma, and other areas, publishing nearly 600 research papers, more than 10 monographs, and receiving over 10 national, provincial, and ministerial-level awards. As a department of an important clinical teaching hospital in China, we have consistently undertaken the training of senior professional talents, including undergraduate students, graduate students, visiting physicians, and postgraduate students, and have organized more than 20 national continuing education training programs, making us the most influential training base for clinical occupational disease professionals in China.
