Peking University Third Hospital (Peking University Third Hospital) was founded in 1958. It is a hospital directly managed by the National Health Commission, integrating medical care, teaching, research, preventive healthcare, rehabilitation, and health management. It is a comprehensive tertiary Grade A hospital. Over the years, the hospital's medical service volume and efficiency have consistently ranked among the top in Beijing, receiving an A++ rating in the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals for six consecutive years. In 2022, it was selected as one of 14 pilot hospitals for high-quality development of public hospitals nationwide. The hospital has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 recipients of the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 Changjiang Scholars, and 2 leading scientific and technological innovation talents under the National High-level Talent Special Support Program. In 1999, the Rheumatology specialty group was established at Peking University Third Hospital, with the Rheumatology and Immunology outpatient clinic officially opening in January 2000, and the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology formally established in 2006. Over nearly 20 years of development, the department's influence in Beijing and nationwide has continued to rise. It serves as a demonstration unit for the integrated diagnosis and treatment of spondyloarthritis under the National Clinical Research Center for Orthopedics and Sports Rehabilitation. In recent years, it has ranked among the top 20 nationally in the field of rheumatology and autoimmune diseases in the Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM). Currently, the department has 30 inpatient beds, with an annual outpatient volume of 70,000 visits and over 1,600 inpatient admissions per year. The department has 28 active medical staff members, including 2 professors and associate professors, 3 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, 1 associate researcher, and 1 deputy chief nurse. There are 3 postgraduate supervisors. The department has carried out several distinctive diagnostic and therapeutic programs, including CAR-T cell therapy for refractory rheumatic diseases, platelet-rich plasma therapy for severe osteoarthritis, botulinum toxin injection for refractory Raynaud's phenomenon and acral ulcers, and ultrasound-guided minimally invasive joint interventions. The department operates specialized disease clinics, combined medical-pharmacy clinics, evening VIP clinics, weekend clinics, and internet-based cloud clinics, providing comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services. In 2024, it received the "First Prize for Outstanding Service Collective" at Peking University Third Hospital. The department's nursing team works in coordination with clinical and research development, accumulating extensive experience in rheumatic disease management and critical care. The department is an authorized site for doctoral and master's degree programs at Peking University and serves as a training base for rheumatology and immunology specialists. Multiple staff members have received the Outstanding Teacher Award from Peking University Health Science Center and Peking University Third Hospital. A total of over 30 graduate students have been trained. Nearly 100 visiting physicians from across the country have been trained, including several discipline leaders and senior specialists in rheumatology from various regions. As a key unit of the National Key Laboratory and the Basic Science Center of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the department has successively undertaken 13 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, 2 projects funded by the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, 1 National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 Outstanding Research Program of the Beijing Municipal Health Commission, and 1 project funded by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation. Department members have published research findings in high-impact journals such as Nature, Cell, Immunity, Cell Stem Cell, and Nature Reviews Rheumatology. The department has served as lead or co-editor for multiple rheumatology textbooks and monographs, including *Chart-Based Clinical Rheumatology*, *Case Analysis of Rare and Difficult Diseases in Rheumatology and Immunology*, and *Rheumatology and Immunology*, and has delivered dozens of presentations at major international academic conferences. The department is also one of the early-approved national clinical pharmacology trial bases, capable of undertaking Phase I-IV clinical drug trials. Over the past five years, it has undertaken more than 40 international and domestic multicenter clinical drug trials, leading multiple Phase I clinical trial projects, including the "Multicenter, randomized, open-label clinical trial evaluating the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of YL-90148 tablets in gout patients" and the "Phase Ib, open-label, dose-escalation study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of PIT565 in participants with rheumatoid arthritis (RA)." The department director, Professor Mu Rong, serves as the Chair of the Education Committee of the Asia-Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR), demonstrating significant academic influence. The department has always upheld the public welfare nature of public hospitals, safeguarding people's health and lives with the responsibility of a "national team." From the snowy plateau to the frontlines of pandemic response, the department has demonstrated medical compassion through concrete actions. Multiple physicians and nurses from the department have participated in national medical teams aiding Hubei during the COVID-19 pandemic, provided emergency support to Lhasa during outbreaks, and continuously carried out medical assistance programs in Tibet and Xinjiang, including "group-style" medical talent support in Tibet, where they have worked in relay to support local healthcare development, and solid efforts in Xinjiang assistance. Under the leadership of Professor Mu Rong, the department upholds a rigorous academic approach, remains patient-centered in all endeavors, and pursues technical excellence. All staff continuously improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic and immunologic diseases, rescuing numerous patients with complex and critical conditions. The Department of Rheumatology and Immunology at Peking University Third Hospital has always advanced with the principle of "benevolent medicine and sincere practice," dedicating nearly 20 years to diligent research and steady progress, providing patients with opportunities for recovery and contributing to the development of rheumatology as a discipline. In the future, with both opportunities and challenges ahead, the department will remain true to its original mission, continue to strive for new achievements, and write new chapters in its development.
