The Department of Nephrology at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1988. After 30 years of dedicated effort, it has developed into a specialized department with comprehensive subspecialties, advanced technology, complete facilities, integrated development of clinical care, teaching, and research, a well-structured talent pipeline, high academic standards, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, and nationwide recognition. The department comprises 9 chief physicians/professors, 7 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians, and 4 resident physicians, all holding doctoral degrees; 57 nurses, including 1 chief nurse, 1 associate chief nurse, and 12 supervisor nurses; 2 dietitians; and 3 technicians. Clinically, the department focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of common kidney diseases and critical, complex conditions, gradually developing specialized programs in membranous nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease genetic interruption, and pregnancy-related kidney disease. It offers a full range of blood purification therapies, with peritoneal dialysis services ranking nationally leading in both scale and quality. In education, the department has 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 master's supervisors, and multiple lecturers, demonstrating high proficiency in undergraduate, postgraduate, resident standardized training, and visiting physician education. It has supervised the graduation of 23 doctoral students and 19 master's students. In research, the department emphasizes collaborative clinical and basic research with the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Peking University Health Science Center, achieving a series of innovative results in areas such as the role of local renal tissue immunity in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy and the mechanisms of membranous nephropathy. Since 1990, the department has been the first in China to perform ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, accumulating over 5,000 cases. Each patient undergoing renal biopsy receives clinicopathological discussion. Extensive clinical experience has been gained in the diagnosis and treatment of various complex and critical kidney diseases, including acute renal failure, primary and secondary glomerulonephritis (membranous nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, hypertensive nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, severe lupus nephritis, severe vasculitis, and pregnancy-related kidney disease), achieving an advanced level domestically. The department is one of the earliest units in Beijing to perform peritoneal dialysis and serves as a Ministry of Health Peritoneal Dialysis Training and Demonstration Center. It currently manages over 300 maintenance peritoneal dialysis patients, making it one of the largest peritoneal dialysis centers nationwide. A hallmark of the center is its responsibility-based outpatient management system, emphasizing nutritional assessment and guidance for patients while strongly promoting patient self-management education and encouraging patient participation in their own treatment process. The Blood Purification Center of Peking University Third Hospital was established alongside the department's founding. It currently operates 85 hemodialysis machines and 5 CRRT machines, offering various blood purification therapies including hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, hemoperfusion, plasma exchange, immunoadsorption, lipid apheresis, bilirubin adsorption, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and leukocyte adsorption. The center manages over 300 maintenance hemodialysis patients, with more than 30 patients having undergone dialysis for over 10 years. Our work has rekindled the hope of life for numerous uremic patients, and together we strive to create a brighter future. In April 2006, the department established China's first Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Management Clinic, adopting an advanced management model with Chinese characteristics. The clinic establishes comprehensive clinical information records and long-term follow-up systems for CKD patients, emphasizing continuous patient care, education on disease-related knowledge and self-management skills, nutritional assessment and guidance, and encouraging patients to modify their lifestyles—including salt restriction and appropriate protein intake—to avoid factors that may worsen renal function, ensure rational medication use, standardize diagnosis and treatment, and maximally delay disease progression. The clinic has also initiated rehabilitation programs to help patients reintegrate into society. We are committed to engaging with patients nationwide through various forms of patient education, including outpatient follow-up, online and offline educational lectures, WeChat public accounts, and the department's website, with the goal of empowering CKD patients to become experts in managing their own conditions. The Department of Nephrology remains dedicated to the integrated development of clinical care, teaching, and research. All members of the department work collectively to improve the quality of life and disease outcomes for CKD patients, ensuring that patients with kidney disease receive clear, informed care and enjoy healthy, fulfilling lives.
